Kone in hospital after clash with Lyon goalkeeper
Marseille striker Bakari Kone was taken to hospital after taking a heavy knock to the head during Marseille’s 1-0 loss to Lyon in the French Cup on Wednesday.
Midway through the first half, Kone burst into the penalty box and as Lyon goalkeeper Hugo Lloris rushed out to block the Ivory Coast striker’s shot he caught the left side of Kone’s head with his knee.
Kone fell backward and lay prone for several moments before leaving the field on a stretcher.
Marseille president Pape Diouf told French television that Kone had been taken to hospital for tests, but no further details were immediately given.
Diouf added that the onrushing Lloris made no effort to slow down and should have been more careful.
French Cup-holder Lyon won the match at Stade Gerland on a second-minute goal from top scorer Karim Benzema and next plays Lille, Lyon coach Claude Puel’s former club.
