Former Germany captain Lothar Matthaeus will not be joining Hungarys FC Fehervar, after he failed to agree a contract with the team.

FC Fehervar announced Matthaeus hiring three weeks ago, but the team has since issued a brief statement saying negotiations had fallen through.

Discussions have now ended without result, FC Fehervar said on its Web site Saturday, adding that both parties had agreed not to disclose details of the talks.

Matthaeus, who coached Hungarys national team in 2004-05 without much success, was to sign a two-year deal with FC Fehervar, with a club option for a third year.

The 48-year old Matthaeus has held coaching jobs at Israels Maccabi Netanya, Austrias Rapid Vienna and Red Bull Salzburg, Atletico Paranaense of Brazil and Serbias FK Partizan.

He played 150 games for Germany, leading the team to victory at the 1990 World Cup in Italy.
