WASHINGTON — Guillermo Barros Schelotto scored a 98th-minute penalty kick and the Columbus Crew reached their first U.S. Open Cup final since 2002 with a 2-1 overtime semifinal victory over short-handed D.C. United on Wednesday.
The Crew, who beat Los Angeles 1-0 in the 2002 final for their first domestic trophy, will play the winner of Wednesdays later semifinal between the Seattle Sounders and Chivas USA.
United, who led after Pablo Hernandezs 13th-minute penalty kick, fell short of reaching their third straight final and fifth overall despite creating more chances during regulation.
But after Hernandez received a red card for a kick at Columbus Danny ORourke in the 59th minute, the Crew tied it in the 89th minute on what was ruled Marc Burchs own goal. Really, Andy Iros 10-yard shot was goalbound regardless of Burchs redirection off the goal line.
Andy Najar then missed a breakaway chance to win it for United in regulation. And After Carey Talleys foul in the penalty area led to Schelottos goal, Dejan Jakovic blasted Najars cross over a wide open goal with a chance to tie it again in the 105th minute.
