Yes they do. They are ranked as a high-performance team by the IRB. They are a second tier team along with Canada, Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, Japan and Romania. They are ranked 17th in the World. They could probably hold their own against England.
Considering that there is no professional league in the United States, and given the dominance of the gridiron/Americanized form of the game there, the Americans do OK at Rugby Union. A decent second tier power. They gave a fine performance against Ireland in the recent World Cup, put in a decent effort against Italy and beat Russia quite handily. Of course they were no match for the Wallabies.
Don’t start the “why do they call it football?” thing. The reasons are historical, and anyway “soccer” is actually an English invention. It’s a slang form of “association”, as in “Football Association”. The English developed it to distinguish the Football Association kicking-only game from Rugby Football.
I Live in New Zealand Which recently hosted the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
I watched all 4 of the USA Eagles matches they are not to good but have a lot to be proven!
Todd Clever who is the captain is great he is worthy of playing for a great club and really lifted the eagles expectations. They should be a very tough team in the next couple of years and i cant wait to see them play at the 2015 world cup in England!
Yes, the Eagles.
The English invented the term “soccer,” so take it up with them.
