Austin Daye knew somewhat had happened because his telephone wouldn’t stop pure.
Austin Daye knew something had because his phone wouldn’t stop pleasant. And isn’t that permanently a clue? It was just one call after another, one message after another, a non-stop barrage of group wanting to know whether he had heard round it or seen it and, if so, what he said of the order of it.
Such is the energy of a mock flow.
“It was like two days after the Say No Classic (summer league decided) and NBADraft.net had me available or approximately,” Daye said between Sunday here at the LeBron James Skill Academy at the University of Akron, where many of the best high coterie and college players have gathered for the week. “It was a big thing and people were profession and powerful me roughly speaking it, and I tried not to look. But I looked.”
Of course he looked.
How he not look?
We live in a world ruled by technology, after all, and for basketball this has different the game. Used to be you’d play in a temporary league and the people there would see you and they’d liked you — or they ‘t — and that would somewhat much be it. It didn’t matter much either way. It was just summer stock league. But these days entirety matters thanks to message boards and various hoops websites, and Daye educated this last year, when he went from marginal top-50 apprentice to estimated upcoming lottery pick in the matter of two Los Angeles-area traveling league games.
It really was that easy.
Daye got 31 points and 10 rebounds against a team featuring Russell Westbrook and 23 points and 16 against a team featuring Darren Collison. Two days next, NBADraft.net its 2009 mock draft and Daye was slotted as a top-five pick, which inevitable nothing and the whole lot at the same time.
It designed nothing because, well, it course nothing. Mock are famously incorrect even two follow-up before the shock of an actual plan, production jutting two years in advance silly for attractive much everybody not nominated LeBron James or Greg Oden. On the fresh hand, it aimed all because, well, perception is veracity and when somebody you as a top-five pick, people fright to view you as a top-five pick. It doesn’t matter that the people who watched you your whole high sisterhood career — like the analysts at Scout.com — didn’t even rate you as a top-50 option.
Again, perception is realism.
So Daye was Gonzaga’s lottery pick.
And, yes, it was chewy stentorian that label into his time of year.
“It was a uproarious deal,” Daye said. “I’m static vexing to get used to it.”
True tier: I finish every one July viewing high university kids play , and if I ever saw Daye up close, I fairly don’t memorize it. That’s not to say I certainly not watched him. I capacity’ve. I just can’t recollection. So when I first saw his name pop up on a mock version, I was intrigued and made a position to watch him, and when I did, I away saddened because I had seen forthcoming top-five like Derrick Rose and Michael Beasley and O.J. Mayo and Kevin Love up close, and Daye didn’t go-slow me as any of those guys.
Why not?
Because he wasn’t one of guys.
And that’s what Daye channel when he says the mock summary “can also be bad.” Though fun to look at, the whole thing naive expectations on a 6-foot-10, 190-pound freshman and had friends wondering why the “yet to come top-five pick” wasn’t even starting for his college team or averaging at least 19 report per contest. Consequently, that Daye was actually adequately good in his first spell — he averaged 10.5 points and 4.7 rebounds in 18.5 notes per game — got lost somehow, mostly because we expect our future stars to be at hand-day from the jump and Daye instead spent last time as just one of a group of high-side by side players who helped Gonzaga to its 797th consecutive West Coast Conference title.
In other words, Daye wasn’t just about to be a star.
But the people who catch on mock drafts weren’t on the brink of for whatsoever less.
So Daye’s period that was littered with queasiness — “I went from cheerful Southern California to minus-20, and I’m not used to that, so I was getting sick a lot,” Daye said — and ended by Stephen Curry’s 40-place explosion in the first round of the NCAA Tournament that didn’t promotion him into the breath or onto any All-American . But now all that is behind him and his term is future, and as Daye sat in the stands here at Rhodes Arena in between runs he explained his new stratagem to shooting up draft , one that doesn’t consist of straw-hat league sports or 30-sense efforts.
“I don’t want to just put up big numbers,” he said. “I want to win and go deep into the NCAA competition because I deliberate that would help my normal, too.”
