PSG beats Marseille 4-2 in French league.
Guillaume Hoarau scored in each half as Paris Saint-Germain rallied to beat Marseille 4-2 to move into sixth place in the French league on Sunday.

A win for Marseille would have taken it above Lyon and into first place, but instead it capitulated in the second half to lose its unbeaten record and stay in second place.

PSG coach Paul Le Guen was criticized for resting key players in Thursday’s 3-1 UEFA Cup loss to Schalke 04, but his team looked fresh as a result.

“It’s a really good result. We won in Marseille and scored four goals,” Le Guen said. “We were a bit lucky when (Benoit) Cheyrou’s shot hit the crossbar, but then we took our chances well.”

After PSG took the lead through Hoarau’s goal in the 10th minute, Marseille led 2-1 at halftime on goals from Mamadou Niang in the 21st and Mathieu Valbuena just before the interval. But PSG then scored three goals in the second half.

Peguy Luyindula made it 2-2 in the 52nd, then Jerome Rothen put PSG ahead when his free kick bounced over goalkeeper Steve Mandanda in the 76th. Luyindula set up Hoarau for his second goal in the 82nd.

PSG, which also came back twice to beat Lorient in the previous round, is confident ahead of Wednesday’s match against Toulouse.

“Just like last week against Lorient, we showed the physical and mental strength to come back,” said Hoarau, who tops the scoring charts with six goals alongside Lyon’s Karim Benzema. “We were really determined. You have to praise our teamwork above anything else.”

Lyon, which drew 0-0 at Auxerre on Saturday, leads with 21 points, two more than Marseille. Le Mans, Toulouse and Bordeaux are all on 18 points and PSG is next with 17.

Marseille slipped to its second straight defeat after losing 2-0 to PSV Eindhoven in midweek.

“We knew Paris had some talent,” Valbuena said. “We really wanted to make up for our result in the Champions League, but instead we let in four goals in front of our fans.”

At Stade Velodrome, Hoarau put PSG ahead in the 10th with a towering header from Rothen’s corner. PSG looked in total control until a sloppy error gifted Marseille an equalizer.

Valbuena whipped in a cross from the left and PSG defender Gregory Bourillon headed the ball over his own goalkeeper and into the path of Niang, who headed into an empty net for his fourth league goal of the season.

Valbuena made it 2-1 when he struck from close range after goalkeeper Mickael Landreau spilled a shot from Bakary Kone.

Luyindula, who used to play for Marseille, equalized when he ran onto a pass from Stephane Sessegnon and clipped the ball over the arm of Mandanda.

Marseille almost took the lead again in the 70th when Cheyrou’s fierce, dipping volley bounced down off the crossbar but failed to cross the line.

The Web site of sports daily L’Equipe reported that two PSG fans received minor injuries from fighting between rival supporters near a service station.

Also, Grenoble climbed into sixth place with a 2-0 win at Saint-Etienne, while Sochaux remains the only team without a victory after drawing 1-1 at Nancy.

Grenoble took the lead in the third minute when forward Daniel Moreira’s shot deflected off defender Yohan Benalouane. Franck Dja Djedje headed in Grenoble’s second goal from a corner in the 82nd.

At Nancy, midfielder Stephane Dalmat put Sochaux ahead in the 19th when he converted a pass from Marvin Martin’s free kick. But Sochaux was denied its first win of the season when Marc-Antoine Fortune equalized with a header in the 75th.

Odense draws FC Copenhagen 0-0 in Danish league. OB Odense drew 0-0 with FC Copenhagen on Sunday to stay top of the Danish league.

Copenhagen goalkeeper Jesper Christiansen saved several shots and headers from striker Djiby Fall in the first half, while Odense’s Peter Maduabuci Utaka hit the post in the 78th minute at Parken stadium.

Striker Cesar Santin and midfielder Thomas Kristensen missed chances for Copenhagen.

Odense leads the standings with 25 points, one ahead of Copenhagen.

Brondby stayed third in the 12-team league after crushing fourth-place FC Midtjylland 3-0, with goals in the 20th from Jan Kristiansen and 52nd from Morten Duncan Rasmussen. Ousman Jallow added an 87th-minute headed goal.

Defending champion Aalborg, which fired its coach Bruce Rioch last week after a poor start to the season, drew 2-2 with Randers.

Aalborg hasn’t won a game since the end of August and stays next-to-last in the standings.

On Saturday, FC Nordsjalland beat AC Horsens 3-1 and Aarhus defeated Vejle 2-1

On Monday, last-place Esbjerg plays SonderjyskE.

Arsenal beats West Ham 2-0.

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Arsenal beats West Ham 2-0. An injury-time goal from Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor sealed a 2-0 win over West Ham on Sunday in a hard fought encounter that keeps the Gunners in the title hunt.

Adebayor came on as a late substitute at Upton Park and immediately made an impact. In the 75th minute, the Togo international fired a shot that appeared to be going wide until West Ham right-back Julien Faubert poked the ball past his own goalkeeper for an own goal.

Adebayor nearly made it 2-0 in the 80th but West Ham goalkeeper Robert Green parried the shot and the striker put the rebound over the bar. But Adebayor got his fourth league goal of the season in injury time, collecting a superb pass from Nicklas Bendtner, rounding Green who had come off his line and then placing a right-footed shot into the goal from about 18 yards.

The victory leaves Arsenal in fourth place with 19 points, a point behind Hull, which continued its dream start to its first season in the Premier League, beating West Brom 3-0 on Saturday.

“It’s a big win for us because to come out with a frustrating 0-0, we would have wasted an opportunity to get closer to the top,” Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said. “We knew before the game that we couldn’t drop points today.”

It was West Ham’s third consecutive loss and Gianfranco Zola’s fifth match in charge since taking over from Alan Curbishley.

“It might look crazy, but I’m not worried at all because we’re going to get through this moment and it’s going to be hard to beat us,” Zola said.

The Hammers will try to end their drought Wednesday when they take on defending champions Manchester United at Old Trafford. But they may be without their top scorer, striker Carlton Cole, who was shown a red card late in injury time for a challenge on Arsenal midfielder Alex Song.

Zola didn’t believe it should have been a straight red and he hopes the referee has another look at the tackle. Otherwise, the Italian praised his team’s performance.

“We played well, the players’ committment is fantastic, their attitude is perfect,” Zola said. “On the pitch, they are doing everything I asked them to do. So I have no complaints. We are just not getting the results. It’s very frustrating.”

Arsenal had the most chances in a scoreless first half with Theo Walcott leading the charge. The England international hit the bar in the 20th minute after a great run down the right.

The 19-year-old winger went close six minutes later with a left-footed shot from close range that was tipped away by West Ham goalkeeper Robert Green, who also saved another shot from Walcott in the first minute.

West Ham had two clear chances in the first half, the first coming in the 10th minute when midfielder David Di Michele fired a shot from 25 yards out that was tipped just over the bar by Arsenal ‘keeper Manuel Almunia.

In the 29th, midfielder Scott Parker released striker Craig Bellamy with a superb through ball and the Wales international’s left-footed shot from about 10 yards was well saved by Almunia, who stuck out his left leg to deflect the ball away for a corner.

West Ham fans were disgruntled throughout the first half as their team gave away the ball too easily.

But the Hammers played much better at the start of the second half, upping the tempo and putting pressure on Arsenal’s defenders, and defending well themselves.

“West Ham decided to frustrate us by defending very deep and protect very well the center,” Wenger said. “We needed to stretch their defenders in the final third.”

In the 51st minute, Cole’s header narrowly missed the target from a free kick from Bellamy.

Arsenal, however, regained composure as the second half wore on. Striker Robin van Persie had a left-footed shot from the edge of the area parried by Green for a corner. Two minutes later, the Dutch international struck a free kick that hit the left post.

Wenger made three changes from the side that beat Fenerbahce 5-2, dropping Adebayor and midfielders Denilson and Abou Diaby from the starting lineup. Adebayor and Diaby came on in a double substitution in the 67th minute, replacing Walcott and midfielder Samir Nasri.

The Frenchman decided to rest Adebayor for most of the match because of a busy schedule.

“Last year, I overused him and now we go into a period where we play every three days. When there’s a little breather in the championship you play again in the Champions League and that’s why I want to rotate (the players) a little bit.”

Arsenal’s next match is another derby, this time against struggling north London rival Tottenham at Emirates Stadium on Wednesday.

Harry Redknapp has just been appointed as the new manager at White Hart Lane after Tottenham’s worst ever start to a season - gaining just two points from its first eight matches - cost Juande Ramos his job. The appointment paid immediate dividends with Tottenham getting its first Premier League win of the season, beating Bolton 2-0 on Sunday.

Aris upsets Olympiakos 1-0 in Greek league.

Aris upsets Olympiakos 1-0 in Greek league.
Spanish striker Javito scored a first-half goal Sunday to help Aris beat visiting Olympiakos 1-0 in the Greek league.

It was the first defeat this season for the defending champions, who still top the league with 16 points. PAOK beat Levadiakos 3-1 on Saturday to be second with 15 points.

Aris controlled play throughout, with Javito scoring with a header in the 18th minute.

A disorganized Olympiakos had its best chance in the 90th, when a blistering shot by Fernando Belluschi from inside the area sailed over the crossbar.

Panathinaikos drew 2-2 at home with Iraklis. Panathinaikos is fourth with 11 points, but has a match in hand.

Panathinaikos took the lead in the 33rd after a header by Vangelis Mantzios. Iraklis leveled in the 62nd when Manolis Papasterianos scored with a deflected shot off Panathinaikos defender Loukas Vyntraon after a counterattack.

Two minutes later, 25,000 Panathinaikos fans at Athens Olympic Stadium were silenced when Kiko Raton gave Iraklis a 2-1 lead off a pass from Papasterianos. But Dimitris Salpingidis equalized just seconds before the final whistle after a cross by Sotiris Ninis.

Also Sunday, it was: Thrasivoulos 3, AEK 3; Xanthi 2, Panserraikos 1; and Ergotelis 2, Panionios 5.

Valencia moves top after 1-1 at Recreativo.

Valencia moves top after 1-1 at Recreativo.
Valencia confirmed its best Spanish league start Sunday after David Villa’s second-half goal gave it a 1-1 draw at Valladolid to keep it at the top of the standings.

The Spain striker continued his incredible scoring run since a victorious European Championship campaign, putting a loose ball in at the near post in the 62nd minute after goalkeeper Asier Riesgo’s reaction save of Juanma Mata’s header.

Valencia leads with 20 points as it stayed unbeaten through eight rounds to lead by one point ahead of FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, which beat Athletic Bilbao 3-2.

Gonzalo Higuain scored two goals for Madrid to win despite Athletic rallying from a two-goal deficit. FC Barcelona had demolished Almeria 5-0 on Saturday for the two Spanish giants to stay one point ahead of Villarreal and two up on Sevilla, which lost 1-0 to Malaga.

Atletico Madrid blew a two-goal advantage and then rallied with 10 men with two goals in the closing stages to snatch a 4-4 draw at Villarreal. Simao Sabrosa scored twice and set up the other two goals, including substitute Raul Garcia’s 86th-minute equalizer.

At Recreativo, the hosts took a 47th-minute lead thanks to a swift counterattack. Javier Camunas took Javi Guerrero’s pass inside the area and beat goalkeeper Renan with a high shot at the near post.

Joaquin Sanchez crossed to an unmarked Mata, but Riesgo saved his hard header. Two defenders failed to clear the bouncing ball as Villa, who led Euro 2008 with four goals, matched Samuel Eto’o of Barcelona for the league lead with nine goals.

Wesley Sneijder gave Madrid a 13th-minute lead at Santiago Bernabeu stadium with a left-footed shot past goalkeeper Gorka Iraizoz from inside the area.

Higuain scored his first goal in the 29th after rolling a low shot beyond Iraizoz.

Athletic’s Joseba Etxeberria shot past goalkeeper Iker Casillas six minutes later, and teammate Andoni Iraola converted a penalty after Gabriel Heinze fouled Fernando Llorente to close a temperamental first half that finished with the two coaches bickering with one another.

Madrid coach Bernd Schuster had benched Sergio Ramos after the Spain defender criticized the team’s tactics on Saturday.

Madrid, the two-time defending champion, was back in front after Fernando Gago sent Higuain through for the winner in the 59th.

Athletic was reduced to 10 men in the 78th after Fernando Amorebieta was sent off.

Villarreal matched its biggest ever comeback by scoring three goals in 10 second-half minutes to lead 3-2, only for Atletico to rally and snap a three-game league losing streak.

Simao started the comeback by beating Villarreal goalkeeper Diego Lopez with a low shot in the 84th. Two minutes later, Garcia headed Simao’s free kick in at the far post with a goal that helped under-fire coach Javier Aguirre.

It had started well for Atletico, with Simao striking a wicked shot in the first minute that went in off the underside of the crossbar after Lopez just touched touched the ball.

Atletico’s Diego Forlan scored his first goal against his former team in the 22nd. Diego Godin played Simao’s centering pass into the path of the Uruguay striker, who beat Lopez at the short side with a fierce shot to make it 2-0.

Villarreal midfielder Marcos Senna scored with a swerving drive in the 48th, 10 minutes after Atletico’s Ever Banega was sent off.

Joseba Llorente, who scored a hat trick for Villarreal in midweek Champions League action, poked a through ball under goalkeeper Leo Franco to equalize in the 51st. Gonzalo Rodriguez volleyed in Robert Pires’ pass in the 58th to put Villarreal 3-2 up.

Italy striker Giuseppe Rossi rounded a defender and Franco to score Villarreal’s fourth in the 68th.

Sevilla, which endured its first defeat in 11 games in all competitions, would have joined Valencia on 20 points with a seventh straight victory on Sunday.

Adrian Lopez ended Andres Palop’s club record scoreless streak at 511 minutes in the 16th when the Malaga striker coolly slotted a right-footed strike underneath the Sevilla goalkeeper to boost the newly promoted club into sixth.

In other results Sunday, it was: Numancia 2, Racing Santander 1; Mallorca 3, Espanyol 0; Deportivo La Coruna 0, Sporting Gijon 3; and Getafe 1 Valladolid 0.

Numancia moved out of last after Domingo Cisma’s goal injury time goal gave the team its first victory since an opening day win over Barcelona.

Numancia led through Javier Barkero in the 26th before Mohammed Tchite’s penalty made it 1-1 a minute before Cisma’s winner.

David Barral scored one goal and set up another to lead Sporting Gijon to its third straight win and its first at El Riazor stadium.

Barral scored in the 22nd from the penalty spot. Four minutes later on a counterattack, he played a perfectly placed pass for Carmelo Gonzalez to slide the ball into an empty net. Diego Castro scored the third goal with a solo effort in the 85th.

Aritz Aduriz scored with two headers for Mallorca as Espanyol goalkeeper Carlos Kameni made several errors.

Aduriz headed into an open goal in the 48th after Kameni came out to claim the short cross. The Cameroon goalkeeper couldn’t reach the Basque striker’s second in the 60th, and was caught out by Fernando Varela’s chip in the 76th.

Cata Diaz scored the winner for Getafe by heading past goalkeeper Segio Asenjo despite appearing to be offside.

Real Betis beat Osasuna 2-0 on Saturday and Sporting Gijon’s subsequent victory dropped winless Osasuna into last place.

Former Scotland manager Ian McColl dies at 81.

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Former Scotland manager Ian McColl dies at 81.
Ian McColl, the former Rangers captain and manager of Scotland’s national soccer team, has died. He was 81.

The Scottish Premier League club on Saturday did not say when McColl died or give a cause of death.

During a 15-year career with the club, the defender won six league titles, five Scottish Cups and two League Cups.

“He was a magnificent player for Rangers and, of course, a key member of the famous Iron Curtain defense in the post-war era,” Rangers chief executive Martin Bain said.

After making 14 appearances for Scotland, McColl became national manager and won British Home Championships in 1962 and 1963. McColl left Scotland to manage English club Sunderland in 1965.

He is survived by wife Jessie, son Ian and daughter Aileen.

Celtic recovers to beat Hibernian 4-2 and stay top. Celtic beat Hibernian 4-2 after throwing away a two-goal lead in the Scottish Premier League on Saturday.

Rangers, which trails the defending champions by three points but has a game in hand, rallied to beat Hamilton 3-1.

Dundee United beat St. Mirren 2-0, Hearts held Aberdeen 1-1 and Motherwell won 2-1 at Inverness, as did Kilmarnock at Falkirk.

Celtic captain Stephen McManus scored first in the 32nd minute and Cillian Sheridan extended the advantage four minutes later.

Hibernian pulled a goal back in the 41st when Colin Nish deflected Steven Fletcher’s shot past goalkeeper Artur Boruc, and Fletcher leveled the match five minutes after halftime.

Celtic regained the lead in the 76th when substitute Glenn Loovens headed in Shaun Maloney’s corner, and Scott Brown struck the fourth in the 82nd from 20 meters (yards).

“Going to 2-2 was a mental test as well for the team but I learned nothing, absolutely nothing,” Celtic manager Gordon Strachan said. “The players have been doing it for three years now, driving on, winning championships, qualifying against good sides, winning cups, and producing football that is good to watch.”

Rangers fell behind to Brian Easton’s header in the 26th, but Kris Boyd equalized three minutes before halftime and headed home Steven Davis’ cross in the 50th.

Nacho Novo came off the bench to score in the 80th.
