Proudinsky wins San Gabriel at Santa Anita

Proudinsky beat Ferneley by three-quarters of a length to win the $150,000 San Gabriel Handicap on Sunday, one year after finishing second in the Grade II turf event.

Ridden by Rafael Bejarano, Proudinsky ran 1 1-8 miles in 1:48.53.

Proudinsky paid $4.60, $3.20 and $2.80. Ferneley returned $7.80 and $4.80 while Medici Code, third in last years San Gabriel, paid $3.80 to show.

Bejarano was tapped to ride after Garrett Gomez sustained hand and leg injuries in a spill on Saturday. Gomez said he hopes to return to the saddle on Monday when Santa Anita will have a Pick Six carry-over of $156,069.

McCoy’s shrewd game plan helps Exotic Dancer to pole position

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Horse Racing news

You could tell what it meant by the demeanour of Tony McCoy. His customary granite deadpan was replaced by a wide grin and his usual earnest debrief by a hug for Jonjo O’Neill. For jockey and trainer, belated graduation of the exasperating talent called Exotic Dancer was cause for deep satisfaction.

Six previous grade one chases had brought a clutch of silver and bronze medals. Finally, they had to travel abroad to achieve the breakthrough but, for two Irishmen like McCoy and O’Neill, there was added gratification in winning the Lexus Chase, and at the principal expense of Ireland’s only plausible Gold Cup hope.

War Of Attrition has been skilfully coaxed back from serious injury by Mouse Morris, his trainer, but he was beaten 20 lengths yesterday. There were no obvious excuses, whereas for connections of The Listener, who fell at the second, and Neptune Collonges, still in front when departing two from home, there was at least the consoling uncertainty of what might have been.

The latter will assuredly progress and the Irish Hennessy, back here in February, could see him restate the challenge to his stablemates, Denman and Kauto Star, at Cheltenham. And that must now be the aim once more for Exotic Dancer after a change of tactics executed by McCoy brought the glory that had eluded him so long.
Defeat in the Betfair Chase at Haydock, even after the exit of his old nemesis Kauto Star, had left McCoy despairing. Not for nothing, though, has he been champion jockey 13 years in succession. McCoy devised the notion of dropping his horse right off the pace to relax him, then carried it out flawlessly.

His obstacles were chiefly overcome before the race begun. First, he had to obtain release from his day job riding for J.P. McManus, who ran Glenfinn Captain. With this granted, he had to survive a boneshaking fall at Kempton on Saturday which left him prone for several minutes.

The race itself changed shape with the fall of The Listener donating an easy lead to Ruby Walsh on Neptune Collonges. In the back straight for the final time, Exotic Dancer scythed through the field, jumping immaculately. He had taken the measure of War Of Attrition and was the winner in waiting even before the leader hit the second-last hard enough to dislodge Walsh.

Paul Nicholls, left to reflect on a fruitless four-horse raid on this meeting, said: Neptune was in the right place and he would have galloped right to the line. It was just one of those silly mistakes and we won’t rush to run him again before February.

Perversely, though, this also made life harder for McCoy, now left in front. I was worried, because it wasn’t where I wanted to be, he said. I’d kept him out of the race to help him settle - I knew if I rode him like I did at Haydock, he wouldn’t win. Few horses have deserved a grade one as much as him. Take out the top two in the Gold Cup and he’s the next best, so we’d feel sick if something happened to them and we weren’t there.

O’Neill, while agreeing that frustration has been paramount in the training of this gifted horse, believed this was the best he has performed since his days of winning big handicaps at Cheltenham. He is likely to return there next month for the Letheby and Christopher Chase before a third try at the Gold Cup, for which Ladbrokes cut him from 33-1 to 12-1.

Nicholls confirmed that Kauto Star is blooming after his third King George win and that Denman will not run before the Aon Chase at Newbury. You wouldn’t know Kauto has had a race - he seems to know when he’s been good. As for Denman, I could run him in a hurdle race but what would it achieve?

The Nicholls runners were second and fourth in the Coral Welsh National on Saturday as Notre Pere provided a first Irish winner of the Chepstow marathon. A year ago yesterday, the winner took the grade one novice chase at Leopardstown, which this time was widely expected to see Trafford Lad maintain his unbeaten record over fences.

Instead, Trafford Lad idled and was caught close home by Casey Jones, while the grade two three-mile hurdle saw a scrambling head victory for the odds-on Catch Me. It was not an advertisement of his prospects for the World Hurdle and Edward O’Grady, his trainer, observed: I don’t think Nicky Henderson will lose any sleep.

Henderson will be watching intently today, though, as the likely Irish threats to his Champion Hurdle favourite, Binocular, line up in the Festival Hurdle. Sizing Europe, the obvious favourite, was slightly lame yesterday, putting his participation in doubt.

Pepsi cans Beckham from adverts after 10 years

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Despite his high-profile loan move to AC Milan, the fizz could be evaporating from David Beckham’s commercial appeal after ending a 10-year deal with Pepsi.

“David’s football legacy will live on and everyone at Pepsi will continue to be as passionate about his success as we have been over the last 10 years,” the soft drinks manufacturer said. “We wish David well with the many projects he is pursuing and look forward to the possibility of partnering together with him again someday.”

The 33-year-old England midfielder, who is in Italy on loan from Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles Galaxy, still has lucrative sponsorship deals with major brands like Adidas and Armani.

“I have nothing but good memories of my association with Pepsi,” Beckham said. “I’ve played a gladiator, a cowboy, a surfer, and worked alongside Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez as well as some of the biggest names in world football.”

Rio Ferdinand’s back injury flares up again

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand will be out for 10 days after a recurrence of a back injury before Friday’s 1-0 win at Stoke.

Ferdinand is set to miss Monday’s match against Middlesbrough and the following weekend’s FA Cup third-round match at Southampton. It is just a month since he was sidelined with the same injury.

“He had a back spasm again, we have to get to the root of this,” manager Alex Ferguson said. “He’s had this back problem too many times, so we want to get to the bottom of it. First of all, we’ll give him complete rest, but I think he’ll be OK in about 10 days.”

Defender Neven Subotic to play for Serbia

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Defender Neven Subotic has chosen to play soccer for Serbia instead of the United States.

Subotic, who was born in Bosnia and holds an American passport, has played for the U.S. under-17 and under-20s teams. He now plays for Borussia Dortmund in the German league.

Subotic wrote to U.S. soccer officials, informing them of his decision to play for Serbia.

“We wish Neven all the best and continued success in the future,” U.S. Soccer Federation president Sunil Gulati said Thursday.

Subotic had until next Dec. 10, his 21st birthday, to chose his senior national team under rules by soccer’s governing body. He could have picked the U.S., Bosnia or Serbia.

The Serbian soccer federation said on its Web site that Subotic, a Bosnian Serb, made the decision “to return to his roots.” He is expected to debut for Serbia during a tournament in Cyprus in February.

Serbian coach Radomir Antic has said he plans to pair Subotic with Manchester United’s Nemanja Vidic in the center of Serbia’s defense in next year’s World Cup qualifiers.

Subotic has scored five goals for Dortmund this season in the Bundesliga. He has been linked with a move to Napoli of the Italian league during the January transfer window.

Man United returns to Premier League action

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Manchester United returns to Premier League action against Stoke on Friday for the first of two games in four days. Fans and rivals are about to find out whether the midseason trip to Japan has tired or invigorated the defending champions.

United took a brief break from domestic action to compete in and ultimately win the Club World Cup, but its rivals’ inability to put together a winning streak means the Red Devils are just seven points off the lead with two games in hand.

United has regularly been stronger over the second half of the season in each of its 10 Premier League title-winning seasons and victory over Stoke on Friday could be the start of another title charge if Liverpool and Chelsea keep dropping points.

Only defender Patrice Evra is unavailable after being banned for four games over an altercation with a Chelsea groundsman last season, but manager Alex Ferguson otherwise has a fully fit squad - albeit one that could be tired after the grueling trip to Asia.

“The players looked quite fresh in training this morning and I was pleased with that,” Ferguson said Wednesday.

Liverpool still leads despite having drawn four of its past five matches, while Chelsea has won just one of five. With its rivals in that sort of form, wins over Stoke and then Middlesbrough on Monday could put United firmly in the race.

Arsenal looks to be out of contention even before Friday’s game against third-place Aston Villa, with injuries and form to blame for a poor start that has included five defeats in 18 matches. Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas was ruled out for four months this week because of a knee problem, and manager Arsene Wenger could be forgiven for ruing his decision to sell midfielder Lassana Diarra to Portsmouth a year ago.

Injuries to Fabregas, Theo Walcott and Tomas Rosicky have left the Gunners light in midfield, especially with Mathieu Flamini and Alexander Hleb departing in the offseason. Diarra, who left after failing to win a first-team place, could have filled the gap but joined Real Madrid this week in a deal reportedly worth as much as 20 million pounds.

“I have no regrets,” Wenger said. “Not at all. We had a midfield with Hleb, Fabregas, Flamini and Rosicky. He was behind them and didn’t accept it. What can you do?”

Wenger’s midfield at Villa Park will likely be the mostly inexperienced Abou Diaby, Alex Song, Denilson and Samir Nasri, who have an average age of 21.

Liverpool, which has 39 points to Chelsea’s 38, could be boosted by the return of talismanic striker Fernando Torres against Bolton. Torres hasn’t played since Nov. 26 because of a hamstring problem and his participation could be crucial to a team playing twice in three days.

While United has an extra day off before playing its second Christmas game, and Villa has yet another before playing at Hull, Liverpool’s players could be tired by the time they take on Newcastle on Sunday.

Also Friday, Chelsea hosts last-place West Bromwich Albion. The Baggies are on a high after beating Manchester City, while Chelsea’s search for a first win in three games will be hampered by the suspension of captain John Terry for his sending off for a reckless challenge in Monday’s 1-1 draw at Everton.

Meanwhile, Hull is at Manchester City, Everton is at Middlesbrough, West Ham is at Portsmouth, Blackburn is at Sunderland, Fulham is at Tottenham, and Newcastle is at Wigan.

On Sunday, it’s: Arsenal vs. Portsmouth, Blackburn vs. Manchester City, Bolton vs. Wigan, Everton vs. Sunderland, Fulham vs. Chelsea, Newcastle vs. Liverpool, West Brom vs. Tottenham, West Ham vs. Stoke.

Wolverhampton Wanderers gets the chance to consolidate its seven-point lead atop the second-tier League Championship when it hosts Sheffield United on Friday. It then plays at Blackpool on Monday, a day after most of its rivals are in action.

Totti set to be out for 2 months due to leg injury

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

AS Roma captain Francesco Totti is expected to be out for up to two months because of a leg injury.

The 32-year-old playmaker left the pitch in the 31st minute of the Serie A match at Catania on Sunday with a right thigh problem.

Totti underwent further checks that showed a muscular strain Tuesday, the ANSA news agency said. He is likely to miss between seven and nine Serie A games and the Feb. 24 first leg of the Champions League match against Arsenal at Emirates Stadium.

Roma officials couldn’t be reached to confirm the prognosis.

Ronaldinho’s house broken into in Italy

Thieves broke into soccer star Ronaldinho’s house and made off with thousands of dollars worth of goods but left behind the AC Milan midfielder’s Golden Ball trophy, Italian media reports said Wednesday.

Ronaldinho was in his native Brazil when the burglary took place early Tuesday morning, Corriere della Sera reported. Four thieves stole mainly jewelry and watches, Corriere reported.

Ronaldinho, who won the Golden Ball award as the best player in Europe in 2005, is in his first season with Milan. He recently moved into the house, which has been broken into twice before while previous owners lived there, including former Milan player Riccardo Sogliano.

Padres agree to terms with INF Rodriguez

The Padres agreed to terms on a one-year deal with infielder Luis Rodriguez on Wednesday.

The switch-hitting Rodriguez batted .287 with 12 RBIs and 22 runs scored in 64 games in his first season with San Diego. Signed by Minnesota as an undrafted free agent in 1997, Rodriguez has a career average of .257 with six home runs and 50 RBIs over parts of four major league seasons.

San Diego also reached minor league deals with pitchers Kevin Correia, Chris Britton and Oneli Perez, and catcher Eliezer Alfonzo. The four were also invited to spring training.
