Michael Owen England Betting

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer betting

Michael Owen is now just 8/11 with Paddy Power to fail to play for England in South Africa after Fabio Capello all but wrote off the Newcastle strikers international chances.

Failure to be called up for Wednesdays game against Ukraine has moved Owens odds to not make South Africa next summer to odds-on for the first time whilst the 40 goal England striker is now out to 4/1 to ever break Bobby Charltons 49 goal England record.

With his contract up in the summer Owen might believe a change of club will boost his chances. Paddy Power are betting odds on where out of contract Owen will start next season with current club Newcastle the 6/5 favourites. Free-spending Manchester City are the first of the clubs in the running at 4/1 should he move elsewhere with a trip to LA Galaxy out at 33/1.

Darren Haines, spokesman for Paddy Power, said: The England door may not be completely shut if Owen can put a run of games together but with Darren Bents call up effectively demoting Owen to Englands eighth choice striker it doesnt look good.

World Cup Qualifying

Ireland are 15/8 to make it to South Africa with Scotlandat 10/3.

Arsenal beats Hull 2-1 to reach FA Cup semifinals

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

William Gallas disputed goal five minutes from time lifted Arsenal past Hull 2-1 and into the FA Cup semifinals on Tuesday.

Arsenal will meet Chelsea in a semifinal on April 18, the first time the Gunners will play at the rebuilt Wembley.

Hull stunned Arsenal at Emirates Stadium in the 13th minute when defender Andy Dawsons lofted pass found Nick Barmby in the area and his shot deflected off Arsenal defender Johan Djourou and looped in over goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski.

The equalizer didnt arrive until the 75th, after a pass by Nicklas Bendtner in front of goal was deflected into the path of Andrei Arshavin who set up Robin van Persie for an easy tap-in.

Then Gallas, who was stripped of the captaincy earlier in the season for criticizing his teammates, scored the winner.

Hull goalkeeper Boaz Myhill came off his line to punch a long ball clear but it came off Djourou and Gallas won a duel with Dawson to head the ball into an empty net. But Gallas appeared to be in an offside position, according to television replays.

A furious Hull manager Phil Brown blamed referee Mike Riley and his linesman for the loss.

You can talk all about Arsenals passing as much as you want, but coming in at halftime I felt as if we deserved to be in front, Brown said. There was no excuse for the first goal, it was a mistake by us. No excuse for the second goal, it was definitely a mistake by the officials. Thats why were out of the FA Cup. Ask Mr. Riley how much thats going to cost Hull City. I dont think hed understand, I dont think hed care.

Brown said he could not use the word cheat, but thanked journalists for asking a question about whether he felt that way.

You used the word. I cant use that word Im afraid, but that is the case, Brown said. I didnt mention the word cheat. You did.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger denied that Gallas was offside.

The ball was deflected by the fist of the goalkeeper, consequently the ball comes from an opponent and its a normal goal, Wenger said. It hit Djourou first, the goalkeeper after, and then it was a foul on Gallas. Penalty. In fact, we should have got two goals.

Brown also accused injured Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas of spitting at the feet of Hulls assistant manager after the match in the tunnel. Wenger said he didnt see the incident.

The FA Cup win in 2005 over Manchester United was Arsenals last trophy and Wenger has been under increasing pressure from fans to win silverware this season.

Many believe the FA Cup represents Arsenals best chance, because the team has struggled in the Premier League and narrowly advanced to the Champions League quarterfinals in a penalty shootout against AS Roma last week.

Arsenal has lifted the FA Cup 10 times, only one less than the record held by United, which faces Everton in the other semifinal on April 19.

Hulls goal was only the second conceded by Arsenal in the FA Cup this season - the other was in the Gunners 3-1 victory over Plymouth on Jan. 3. The Gunners went on to beat Cardiff 4-0 and Burnley 3-0 to set up the quarterfinal against Hull.

Hull continued to threaten throughout the first half and the scoreline could have easily grown in its favor. Gallas was cautioned for a tackle on Hull striker Peter Halmosi in the 23rd, setting up a free kick that midfielder Geovanni nearly converted with a curving shot that was tipped out by Fabianski for a corner.

A minute later, Barmby was unmarked and his shot found the back of the net, but his effort was canceled for being offside.

Arsenal had several chances to equalize in the first half, mainly through Arshavin. In the 31st, the Russian playmakers shot was palmed away by Myhill. Ten minutes later, Arshavin was alone in front of goal, but Hull defender Samuel Ricketts lunged in just in time to block his shot. In stoppage time, Arshavin blasted the ball across the face of the goal but it swerved just wide.

Arsenal came out stronger in the second half and dominated possession in the opening stages. Arsenals command nearly paid off on several occasions but the Gunners could manage only a few close misses as the half wore on. The referee cautioned Myhill in the second half for time wasting.

Arsene Wenger got my goalkeeper booked, Brown said. You call that good management? He was complaining about time-wasting … Our game plan was working until our goalkeeper got booked. Our game plan wasnt to time-waste.

Van Persies free kick was on target but Myhill was able to push the ball out for a corner. Two minutes later, the Dutch internationals header hit the crossbar off a corner.

Hull was very close to repeating another shock victory over Arsenal this season. Geovanni and Daniel Cousin scored in Hulls 2-1 win over Arsenal in the English Premier League on Sept. 27 - only the second time the Gunners had been beaten at Emirates Stadium since it opened in 2006.

Brown can now focus on avoiding relegation in the Premier League.

Kewell recalled for World Cup qualifier

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Former Liverpool winger Harry Kewell has been recalled to the Australian squad for the April 1 World Cup qualifier against Uzbekistan.

Socceroos coach Pim Verbeek announced a 22-man squad Wednesday for the Sydney match, including Galatasaray forward Kewell along with Everton midfielder Tim Cahill and West Ham defender Lucas Neill in his strongest available squad.

Australia leads Group A with 10 points from three wins and a draw halfway through the last full round of Asian qualifying. The Socceroos are two points clear of second place Japan and six clear of Bahrain and Qatar. Uzbekistan has just one point from a draw and three losses, including a home defeat to Australia.

A win against Uzbekistan would put Australia well on the way to securing one of the top two spots in the Group and automatic qualifying for South Africa 2010. The top two teams in Group B will also qualify directly.

Kewell missed the scoreless draw with leading group rival Japan at Yokohama in February due to injury. Vince Grella and former Glasgow Rangers and Newcastle United defender Craig Moore were not considered for the Uzbekistan match due to injuries.

Uzbekistan will play Qatar at Tashkent and Japan will host Bahrain at Saitama on March 28.

Australia: Michael Beauchamp (Aalborg, Denmark), Mark Bresciano (Palermo, Italy), Jacob Burns (SC Unirea Valahorun, Romania), Tim Cahill (Everton), David Carney (Norwich, England), Scott Chipperfield (FC Basel, Switzerland), Chris Coyne (Colchester, England), Jason Culina (PSV Eindhoven, Holland), Adam Federici (Reading, England), Richard Garcia, (Hull City, England), Brett Holman (AZ Alkmaar, Holland), Mile Jedinak (Genclerbirligi, Turkey), Josh Kennedy (Karlsruhe, Germany), Harry Kewell (Galatasaray, Turkey), Scott McDonald (Celtic, Scotland), Lucas Neill (West Ham, England), Jade North (Incheon United, Korea), Michael Petkovic (Sizasspor, Turkey), Mark Schwarzer (Fulham, England), Mile Sterjovski (Derby, England), Carl Valeri (US Grosseto, Italy), Luke Wilkshire (Dynamo Moscow, Russia).

Austrias Janko to miss Romania match

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Striker Marc Janko will miss Austrias World Cup qualifying match against Romania on April 1 because of exhaustion.

The 25-year-old Red Bull Salzburg striker scored his 33rd goal of the season against Austria Vienna on Sunday but was substituted in the second half after complaining about dizziness.

Janko suffers from a persistent cold and has been taking antibiotics over the last couple of days, the Austrian football federation said in a statement. He is physically extremely exhausted. To avoid medical risks, he wont play for the national team.

Austria coach Dietmar Constantini, who took over from Karel Bruckner earlier this month, called up Austria Vienna forward Rubin Okotie as a replacement.

Constantini also added Rapid Vienna defender Andreas Dober to his 23-man squad after Hoffenheims Andreas Ibertsberger tore ligaments in his right knee Saturday and was ruled out for at least six weeks.

Austria has four points from as many games in World Cup qualifying Group 7 and is almost certain to miss out on next years tournament in South Africa. It plays Romania at the Woerthersee Arena in Klagenfurt.

Pazzini replaces injured forwards in Italys squad

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Giampaolo Pazzini was called up to Italys squad Sunday in place of injured strikers Luca Toni and Alberto Gilardino for key World Cup qualifiers against Montenegro and Ireland.

Pazzini has scored eight goals in 10 games since transferring from Fiorentina to Sampdoria in January. He notched a hat trick in the first game at the new Wembley Stadium two years ago - a 3-3 draw between the Under-21 teams from Italy and England.

Antonio Di Natale, Vincenzo Iaquinta, Fabio Quagliarella and Giuseppe Rossi were the other forwards called up by coach Marcello Lippi.

Toni, who plays for Bayern Munich, has an Achilles tendon injury, while Gilardino exited Fiorentinas 1-0 win over Siena on Sunday with a muscle problem.

Also unavailable are midfielders Gennaro Gattuso, Mauro Camoranesi and Simone Perrotta.

Along with Pazzini, defenders Marco Motta and Salvatore Bocchetti also received their first call ups, while midfielders Matteo Brighi and Pasquale Foggia - with one and two appearances, respectively - rejoined the squad.

Italy is tied for the Group 8 lead in European World Cup qualifying with Ireland. The Azzurri visit Montenegro on Saturday and host Ireland four days later in Bari.

Talented but temperamental striker Antonio Cassano was again left out. Cassano is from Bari and the citys fans made an appeal to Lippi in the form of a large banner at a Serie B match Saturday, but to no avail.

Pazzini plays alongside Cassano at Sampdoria and both scored in a 3-1 win over Torino in Serie A on Sunday.

Squad:

Goalkeepers: Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus), Marco Amelia (Palermo), Morgan De Sanctis (Galatasaray).

Defenders: Salvatore Bocchetti (Genoa), Fabio Cannavaro (Real Madrid), Giorgio Chiellini (Juventus), Andrea Dossena (Liverpool), Alessandro Gamberini (Fiorentina), Fabio Grosso (Lyon), Marco Motta (AS Roma), Gianluca Zambrotta (AC Milan).

Midfielders: Matteo Brighi (AS Roma), Daniele De Rossi (AS Roma), Pasquale Foggia (Lazio), Riccardo Montolivo (Fiorentina), Angelo Palombo (Sampdoria), Simone Pepe (Udinese), Andrea Pirlo (AC Milan).

Forwards: Antonio Di Natale (Udinese), Vincenzo Iaquinta (Juventus), Giampaolo Pazzini (Sampdoria), Fabio Quagliarella (Udinese), Giuseppe Rossi (Villarreal).

Hoffenheim loses 2 more players to injuries

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Hoffenheim, already missing several key players, has lost two more to knee injuries.

Defender Matthias Jaissle tore a ligament in his left knee and is out for the season, while defender Andreas Ibertsberger also hurt his knee and will be out for at least four weeks.

Hoffenheim, promoted at the start of the season, led the Bundesliga at the halfway mark and has been one of the success stories this season. But the team has been decimated by injuries and has not won in seven games.

The latest two injuries came in Saturdays 2-2 draw with Hannover, Hoffenheims fifth draw.

It played without forward Vedad Ibisevic, Chinedu Obasi, Sejad Salihovic and Demba Ba. Ibisevic, who led the league with 18 goals, is also out for the season.

Hoffenheim is now in fifth place, five points behind leader Hertha Berlin.

Everton beats Lanus 2-1 in injury time

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Substitute midfielder Jose Munoz scored in stoppage time Tuesday to give Everton of Chile a 2-1 away victory over Lanus and put the Argentine team on the verge of elimination from Group 6 of the Copa Libertadores.

Munoz scored three minutes into stoppage time at the Lanus stadium after Santiago Biglieri had put the Argentines in front in the 30th minute and Roberto Gutierrez equalized for Everton in the 52nd.

The result leaves Everton level with Mexican club Chivas at the top of the group on seven points. Caracas of Venezuela has six points, with Lanus trailing on two.

Munoz replaced Gutierrez in the 87th minute and beat goalkeeper Carlos Bossio after a neat half-turn in the box to leave Lanus hopes of reaching the last 16 in serious jeopardy.

The Buenos Aires club has stormed to the top of the Argentine league this year with five victories from six, but is winless in four matches in the Libertadores.

Until Biglieris strike, Everton goalkeeper Gustavo Dalsasso had kept the scoreline blank despite the Chileans enjoying a healthy amount of possession.

A lapse in the Everton defense finally forced Dalsasso to bring down Blanco for a penalty. The goalkeeper saved Sands kick, but Biglieri pounced on the rebound to open the scoring.

Gutierrez scored after a move that started with a Lanus corner. Gutierrez smashed a left-footed shot past Bossio between two defenders.

Lanus visit Chivas on April 14, while Everton travel to Venezuela to meet Caracas.

Liverpool avoid match on Hillsborough 20th anniversary

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Liverpool will not have to play a match on April 15, the 20th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster, after UEFA on Friday scheduled their Champions League quarter-final second leg against Chelsea for April 14.

Liverpool had asked UEFA to ensure they did not play on April 15, when a memorial service will be held at Anfield in memory of the 96 fans who were crushed to death at a 1989 FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest at Sheffield Wednesdays Hillsborough ground.

Having been paired with Chelsea, who they have met in the semi-finals in three of the past four seasons, Liverpool discovered that the Anfield first leg would be on April 8 with the London return on April 14.

We could fulfil our promise to Liverpool and that makes us happy and we hope Liverpool fans can find the right atmosphere for honouring their loved ones, UEFA director of communications William Gaillard told Sky Sports News.

Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry said the club were delighted with the outcome.

We are very appreciative of the decision to play the second leg on April 14, Parry told the clubs web site (www.liverpoolfc.tv).

It was always clear from our discussions with UEFA that they understood the issue and the sensitivities involved around the anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster.
