Hamburg draw City in UEFA Cup, derbies possible in semis

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Hamburg SV will play Manchester City in the UEFA Cup quarter-finals and could meet Bundesliga rivals Werder Bremen in the last four.

Shakhtar Donetsk will play Olympique Marseille and Dynamo Kiev face Paris St Germain with the winners lined up to meet in the semis after the draw was made by UEFA on Friday.

No Ukrainian side had ever previously made it to the UEFA Cup last eight.

Werder will be at home first against Italys last European contenders Udinese in their quarter-final tie.

City, the worlds richest club following their takeover by Abu Dhabi United Group last year, needed penalties to beat Denmarks Aalborg in the last round.

Englands last remaining representatives will come up against former Tottenham Hotspur boss Martin Jol, who is now in charge of Bundesliga high-flyers Hamburg.

The UEFA Cup, which will be rebranded as the Europa League from next season, will have a new winner this term after four former champions were knocked out this week.

The quarter-final first legs will be played on April 9 with the second legs on April 16.

The semi-finals take place on April 30 and May 7 with the final set for Wednesday, May 20 at Fenerbahces stadium in Istanbul.

Russia hosts Azerbaijan in Moscow on March 28 in Hiddinks first match since also becoming Chelseas interim manager. Hiddinks team then faces Liechtenstein four days later.

Russia has six points in Group 4, four behind leader Germany but having played a game less.

Squad:

Goalkeepers: Igor Akinfeev (CSKA Moscow), Vladimir Gabulov (Dynamo Moscow), Vyacheslav Malafeev (Zenit St. Petersburg).

Defenders: Sergei Ignashevich (CSKA Moscow), Alexei Berezutsky (CSKA Moscow), Vasily Berezutsky (CSKA Moscow), Alexander Anyukov (Zenit St. Petersburg), Denis Kolodin (Dynamo Moscow), Renat Yanbayev (Lokomotiv Moscow).

West Brom remains in danger after 0-0 at West Ham

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

West Bromwich Albion earned a 0-0 draw at West Ham on Monday that did little to lift the last-place clubs hopes of staying in the Premier League.

The Baggies remain rooted to the bottom of the standings, four points adrift of 19th-place Middlesbrough and six behind No. 18 Stoke. But the visitors twice came close to producing a winner in the second half at Upton Park.

Shelton Martis, in his first topflight start, headed Chris Brunts cross against the crossbar, while Jonathan Greening later chipped over after finding himself in a promising position.

I think I probably should have put my chance away and got us all three points, Greening said. We knew it was going to be a difficult game. (West Ham manager) Gianfranco Zola has got them playing well, but I thought we did all right tonight.

Weve been working hard all season. Its difficult coming up from the (League) Championship but the boys have worked hard and well give it a good go until the end of the season.

West Brom manager Tony Mowbrays decision to deploy a new center back pairing of Martis and Jonas Olsson, back from a knee injury, paid off as the club ended an eight-game run of conceding at least one goal.

I dont think it was an improved performance - the defense was better but the performance was what we get most weeks, Mowbray said. We missed some chances and its a very disappointed changing room there. But its something to build on.

West Ham stayed in seventh place and UEFA Cup qualification.

Zola had been forced to draft in two teenagers - Freddie Sears and Savio Nsereko - to cover for the loss of Carlton Cole and Jack Collison, while defender Matthew Upson was carried off with an apparent calf strain before halftime.

Platini offers Liverpool hope to avoid tragic date

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

UEFA will do its utmost to avoid forcing Liverpool to play a Champions League match on the 20th anniversary of the Hillsborough stadium tragedy.

Liverpool has asked UEFA to ensure it plays the second leg of the quarterfinals on April 14 and not the next night.

It was on April 15, 1989, that 96 Liverpool fans were crushed to death in a fenced-in standing area of the Sheffield stadium where Liverpool was playing Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup semifinals.

Liverpool has never played a match since on the Hillsborough anniversary.

UEFA president Michel Platini said Monday he fully sympathized with Liverpools feelings.

We are aware of the huge significance of the April 15 date for both Liverpool FC and their fans, Platini said in a statement. That is why we will do our utmost to make sure that the club does not have to play its UEFA Champions League second leg quarterfinal match on that day.

UEFA will stage the Champions League draw on Friday in Nyon, and then allocate match dates to the four quarterfinals.

However, the lack of a firm promise to keep Liverpool clear of April 15 has alarmed team captain Steven Gerrard.

Were still waiting to see whether UEFA will make us play on the day, Gerrard said last week. That would be far from ideal given all the emotion that always surrounds the club on that day.

It should be a time that Liverpool Football Club remembers the people who were lost and their families. We hope that UEFA show some common sense.

Gerrard, who had a cousin among the 96 victims, will lead Liverpool players and officials at a memorial service scheduled in the city for April 15.

Five-time European champion Liverpool is among four English teams to reach the quarterfinals, joining Arsenal, Chelsea and defending champion Manchester United. The lineup is completed by Spanish clubs FC Barcelona and Villarreal, Bayern Munich of Germany and FC Porto of Portugal.

The first legs of two quarterfinals are scheduled for April 7, with the return games on April 15. Two others will be played April 8 and April 14.

Chelsea 4 points off Man U after 1-0 over Man City

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

LONDON - Chelsea beat Manchester City 1-0 to move within four points of Manchester United in the Premier League standings on Sunday, and Tottenham beat Aston Villa 2-1 to climb into 11th place, its highest of the season.

Michael Essien scored Chelseas 18th minute winner at Stamford Bridge with his second goal in two games as the Blues made it four league victories in a row since temporary coach Guus Hiddink replaced Luiz Felipe Scolari.

Manchester Uniteds surprise 4-1 loss at home to Liverpool on Saturday has given the chasing teams hope of catching the Red Devils. Both Chelsea and Liverpool are four points behind the defending champion, which has a game in hand.

The door is a little bit open, Hiddink said. It gives them a blow and now all depends on their calmness. Lets see how they react in the coming games, but they have a lot of experience. We have to keep winning.

Jermaine Jenas and Darren Bent fired goals past Brad Friedel, Villas American goalkeeper. John Carew replied in the 85th, but Spurs hung on for the victory, giving it 33 points from 21 games since Harry Redknapp replaced the fired Juande Ramos. Back then Tottenham was last with two points and now is up to halfway, six points above the relegation zone.

FRANKFURT - Hamburger SV beat Energie Cottbus 2-0 to remain four points behind Bundesliga leader Hertha Berlin.

Goals by Ivica Olic and Piotr Trochowski in the first half gives Hamburg 45 points, the same as defending champion Bayern Munich and Wolfsburg.

In Sundays other game, Werder Bremen defeated Stuttgart 4-0 after two goals by Markus Rosenberg to notch its first victory in the second half of the season.

Hertha stayed four points clear with a 1-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday.

GLASGOW, Scotland - Darren ODea and Aiden McGeady scored extra time goals to guide Celtic to a 2-0 victory over traditional rival Rangers in the Scottish League Cup final.

After 90 minutes of goalless football at Hampden Park, ODea gave Celtic the lead in the first minute of extra time. McGeady added the second from the penalty spot in the 120th minute after he had been tripped by Kirk Broadfoot, who was ejected.

It was the first time in 20 years that Celtic had beaten Rangers in a final, the last time being in the more prestigious Scottish Cup in 1989. Celtic now has 14 League Cup titles to Rangers record 25.

AMSTERDAM - Maarten Martens netted the only goal and AZ Alkmaar beat FC Utrecht 1-0 to set a club record of 25th straight games without defeat and maintain an 11-point lead over FC Twente.

Third-place Ajax, which is 14 points behind, beat De Graafschap 3-0, Luis Suarez scoring twice including a penalty.

Olympiakos trounces Iraklis 5-0 in Greek league

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Olympiakos routed visiting Iraklis 5-0 Sunday in the Greek league, scoring five second-half goals to move the defending champions closer to yet another title.

Vassilis Torossidis gave Olympiakos the lead, followed by two goals each from Argentine midfielder Oscar and Matt Derbyshire.

The defending champions, who won 11 of the last 12 league titles, have 62 points from 26 games, nine ahead of Panathinaikos, which beat host Thrassivoulos 1-0.

Olympiakos controlled play from kickoff, nearly scoring in the fourth minute when a shot by Fernando Belluschi from inside the area sailed over Giorgos Bantis crossbar.

Iraklis, which is close to the relegation zone, had its scoring opportunity in the 16th when a low drive by Fernando Marques forced Antonis Nikopolidis to make a fingertip save.

Nikopolidis stole the ball from Iraklis striker Miguel Garcia, who was ready to score before Torossidis gave Olympiakos the lead with a header off a free kick from Belluschi in the 60th.

Four minutes later, Oscar, who replaced Giannis Papadopoulos in the 56th, made it 2-0 off a through ball, again from Belluschi.

Oscar stretched it to 3-0 in the 79th before Derbyshire - on loan from Blackburn - scored in the 82nd and 87th minutes.

Also Sunday, it was: Ergotelis 0, Asteras 1; Levadiakos 1, Panionios 1; and Panthrakikos 2, Panserraikos 1.

Ibrahimovics 2 goals give Inter Milan win

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored two goals Sunday to give Inter Milan a 2-0 win over Fiorentina in Serie A, a confidence boost for the Italian leaders only days after being eliminated from the Champions League.

Ibrahimovic brought his goal tally in the league to 17. He first scored in the 11th minute and then added a second in injury time - the second coming after Inter coach Jose Mourinho was sent off for arguing.

The team had to keep on playing as it has been playing, Ibrahimovic said. We are first in the championship, but unfortunately we are out of the Champions League, but we still have the league and the Italian Cup.

Fiorentina had a chance to take the lead in the 10th minute. Alberto Gilardino led a break from the penalty area and squared the ball to Adrian Mutu, but the Romanias first time shot was smothered by Inter goalkeeper Julio Cesar.

Inter took the lead a minute later when Mario Balotelli floated a free kick into Fiorentinas area. Sebastien Frey tried to punch the ball clear but it rebounded off Ibrahimovic and the Sweden striker was the fastest to react, heading the ball into the open goal.

Ibrahimovic scored his second goal with a free kick.

Dejan Stankovic went close to adding another in the 27th. Following a strong run toward the area, a quick return pass with Ibrahimovic gave him the space for a low shot, but it went just wide.

Fiorentina more chances, too. In the 53rd, Riccardo Montolivios long range shot forced Cesar to push the ball away for a corner, and 10 minutes later Mutu shot wide when Gilardino was unmarked in front of goal.

Cesar had to produce another save in the 82nd, blocking a low shot by Marco Donadel, but central defender Walter Samuel cleared before Mutu could get to the rebound.

Earlier, Filippo Inzaghi scored his 300th goal in professional football to help AC Milan beat Siena 5-1.

The 35-year-old forward scored twice, with his second taking him to the milestone. Strike partner Alexandre Pato also scored two goals after Andrea Pirlo converted an early penalty. Massimo Maccarone scored a consolation goal for the hosts.

I feel a bit like a child. Today Im celebrating an event that fills me with pride, Inzaghi said. Three hundred goals is really a lot. I didnt have time to prepare any celebrations. Ive scored five goals in two weeks that I didnt expect.

Milan made a strong start and quickly took the lead. In the eighth minute, Mathieu Flamini was tripped by Houssine Kharja as he worked to find space in Sienas area and Pirlo made it 1-0 from the penalty spot.

We did better than last week in the build up, Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti said. Unfortunately we dont have a big center forward who can hold the ball up during difficult moments, as instead we have strikers who can escape marking to latch on to through balls.

Ancelotti, who welcomed back Kaka and Ronaldinho after injury, was forced into an early change when goalkeeper Christian Abbiati collided with defender Giuseppe Favalli and the coach had to send on reserve keeper Dida.

Inzaghi scored his sixth league goal of the season to put Milan 2-0 up in first-half injury time. David Beckham swung a corner over a packed area and the unmarked Inzaghi tapped in from short range. Pato got his first in the 55th when he scored in his 13th Serie A goal of the season from long range.

Beckham and Pirlo later linked up and Inzaghi ran beyond the Siena defense to shoot past goalkeeper Gianluca Curci.

Pato added some gloss with his second of the match in the 78th. Ronaldinho hit a long ball over the Siena defense and his Brazil teammate rounded Curci before slotting the ball into the empty net.

Pato was sleeping for a while, but then he scored two goals, Ancelotti said. He has to work on getting involved more, but he scores goals with the ease of a star.

AS Roma, hoping to return to the Champions League next season, drew 2-2 with Sampdoria despite playing for nearly half an hour with only 10 men.

Earlier in the week, coach Luciano Spalletti said the team would be going all out to insure it finished in fourth place. But his team was lackluster and needed a penalty from Julio Baptista in the 70th minute, his second goal of the game, to leave with a share of the points. Roma is fifth in the standings.

The team has done well again, even if there were the usual problems that you get after the being knocked out on Wednesday, Spalletti said. We wanted the boys to give everyone a lift.

Roma made an excellent start when Baptista slid in to tap in Max Tonettos low cross in the seventh minute. Giampaolo Pazzini and Antonio Cassano began to cause problems and Doni had to push away Pazzinis header in the 11th.

Pazzini managed to find the net in the 25th, though. Cassano crossed from the left and his strike partner rose above the defense to head home.

He doubled his tally just before halftime when he tapped in the rebound after Doni could only block Marco Padalinos low shot.

Roma went down to 10 men in the 62nd when fullback Marco Motta received a second yellow card for a foul on Padalino. But Baptista brought Roma level in the 70th, converting a penalty after Tonetto had been brought down by Padalino.

Napoli, under former Italy coach Roberto Donadoni, avoided a 10th consecutive loss with a 1-1 draw at Reggina. Bernardo Corradi gave Reggina the lead, but Ezequiel Lavezzi scored a second-half equalizer.

Also Sunday, it was; Atalanta 2, Torino 0; Lazio 0, Chievo Verona 3; Palermo 5, Lecce 2; and Udinese 1, Catania 1.

Porto takes 4-point lead in Portuguese league

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

FC Porto increased its lead to four points in the Portuguese league Sunday by beating Naval 2-0 to extend its unbeaten run to 15 games.

Mariano Gonzalez scored the first goal in the 30th minute before Luis Lucho Gonzalez added another in the 68th with his ninth goal of the season. Porto last lost at Naval on Jan. 11 - its only road defeat this season.

Porto, which advanced to the Champions League quarterfinals on Wednesday, leads the league with 48 points. Second-place Sporting has 44 points and Benfica has 43.

Sporting shrugged off Tuesdays European rout with a 2-0 victory over Rio Ave on Saturday to move into second after Benficas unbeaten home record ended in a 1-0 loss to Guimaraes.

Also Sunday, Belenenses and Amadora drew 2-2, Setubal beat Trofense 1-0 and fourth-place Braga was held to a 1-1 draw by Academica.

Pacos Ferreira picked up an important 4-0 win over Leixoes on Friday and moved away from the relegation zone. On Monday, fifth-place Nacional plays Maritimo.
