Ferguson: Only Freud could decode Benitez

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Alex Ferguson doesn’t take Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez’s verbal tirades against him too seriously.

“I would need to read more of (Austrian psychiatrist Sigmund) Freud before I could really understand all that,” the Manchester United manager said on Friday.

In January, Benitez launched a scripted attack against Ferguson’s damaging influence on English football in an attempt to gain an upper hand in the title race.

Benitez said Ferguson, who has been in charge at United since 1986, frequently intimidated referees and claimed the Scot was dealt with too leniently by the English Football Association.

“I don’t know where it came from and I’m not really interested,” Ferguson said. “It never bothered me and it doesn’t bother me now.”

Since the outbursts, though, Liverpool has been replaced at the top of the English Premier League standings by the Red Devils, who have a seven-point lead going into Saturday’s clash between the sides.

Benitez responded to Ferguson’s reference to Freud by joking: “My English is not the best, it can improve.”

But the Spaniard still defends his decision to catalog the grievances - he repeatedly calls “facts” - against Ferguson.

“I have not spoken to him since, I do not expect any response from him and I do have great respect for him as a manager,” Benitez said. “I do not believe that my remarks, facts not comments, has had any effect on the title race.

“They have won games in hand but I do not believe what I said had any impact on the situation at the top of the league.”

Grafite hat trick in Wolfsburg win over Schalke

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Grafite scored a hat trick and his forward partner Edin Dzeko also struck as Wolfsburg continued its march up the Bundesliga standings with a 4-3 victory over Schalke at home on Friday.

Wolfsburg extended its winning streak to six games and has won 10 straight contests at home. Felix Magath’s team has jumped to provisional second place with 45 points through 24 rounds, one point behind leader Hertha Berlin, which plays on Saturday.

Magath refused to say his team was ready to contend for the Bundesliga championship.

“You can see that we are not title contenders,” he said. “We twice gave up goals and left ourselves in dangerous situations. Of course we all want to be champions, but we are still missing something to be at the top at the end of the season.”

The game in Wolfsburg was a showdown of the Bundesliga’s top defense in Schalke (21 goals allowed) against the third-best offense in Wolfsburg (46 goals scored).

Wolfsburg fell behind after nine minutes but Grafite equalized and Dzeko scored his 13th of the season for the lead. Grafite notched his second only to see Jermaine Jones make it 3-2 for Schalke.

Grafite answered with goal No. 17 of the season in the final minutes but Kevin Kuranyi’s score in the 90th minute made things interesting.

Schalke played without regular goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who was out with a stomach problem and was replaced by Mathias Schober.

The guests jumped ahead in the ninth minute on a fine goal by Heiko Westermann, who ran onto a long ball over the defense on the right side and one-timed a long looping volley to the far upper left corner.

Grafite scored in the 26th, converting a penalty which he drew himself as Mladen Krstijic fouled him down in the area. Schober chose the correct corner but Grafite’s shot went off the keeper’s hand and off the post and in.

A minute before halftime, Dzeko made it 2-1 with his eighth goal as he volleyed home Grafite’s cross.

On a counterattack in the 74th, Grafite collected a pass, dribbled toward the middle and chipped past Schober.

Jones cut the deficit to one goal with 13 minutes left after a mistake by the Wolfsburg defense.

Grafite struck yet again with six minutes remaining after a fine pass by Ashkan Dejagah.

But Wolfsburg again allowed Schalke to pull within one goal with Kuranyi scoring a minute into injury time.

Ronaldinho, Kaka on Brazil roster for qualifiers

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

AC Milan midfielders Ronaldinho and Kaka were selected for Brazil’s roster for World Cup qualifiers against Ecuador and Peru despite injuries.

Kaka injured a foot on Feb. 7 in a Serie A match against Reggina, and Ronaldinho has had lingering problems with an Achilles’ heel.

AC Milan forward Alexandre Pato and defender Thiago Silva also were picked along with Manchester City forward Robinho and Inter Milan’s Adriano.

Brazil (4-1-5), second to Paraguay in South American qualifying, visits sixth-place Ecuador (3-4-3) on March 29 and hosts last-place Peru (1-5-4) on April 1.

Dunga said that if Ronaldo regains his form, he would be selected. The forward has scored twice in two matches for Corinthians following a one-year layoff caused by a knee injury.

“I’m staying calm on the issue and I’m cheering for Ronaldo,” Dunga said. “He doesn’t need to prove to anyone that he knows how to score goals.”

The roster:

Goalkeepers: Doni (AS Roma, Italy), Julio Cesar (Inter Milan, Italy)

Defenders: Daniel Alves (Barcelona, Spain), Kleber (Internacional), Lucio (Bayern Munich, Germany), Luisao (Benfica, Portugal), Maicon (Inter Milan, Italy), Marcelo (Real Madrid, Spain), Miranda (Sao Paulo), Thiago Silva (AC Milan, Italy)

Midfielders: Anderson (Manchester United, England), Elano (Manchester City, England), Felipe Melo (Fiorentina, Italy), Gilberto Silva (Panathinaikos, Greece), Josue (Wolfsburg, Germany), Julio Baptista (AS Roma, Italy), Kaka (AC Milan, Italy), Ronaldinho (AC Milan, Italy)

Forwards: Adriano (Inter Milan, Italy), Alexandre Pato (AC Milan, Italy), Luis Fabiano (Sevilla, Spain), Robinho (Manchester City, England)

River Plate coach backs Riquelme over Maradona

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Juan Roman Riquelme received unexpected support from River Plate coach Nestor Gorosito on Thursday for quitting Argentina over disagreements with coach Diego Maradona.

Meanwhile, Argentina Football Association president Julio Grondona played down the spat and hoped to talk to Riquelme and Maradona.

Riquelme said on Tuesday he will never play for Argentina while Maradona was the coach.

“(Riquelme) has many principles and he believes they have not been respected,” Gorosito said at a press conference.

He’s one of the few since Tuesday to speak up in support of Riquelme, the star midfielder of archrival Boca Juniors.

Riquelme was unhappy with public criticism from Maradona, who also hadn’t included the team’s leading scorer in World Cup qualifiers since taking charge in November.

Argentina’s main newspapers reported on Thursday that at least 10 international players supported Maradona in the spat with Riquelme, news which infuriated Gorosito.

“Since the resignation, it annoys me that there are players who call a coach to congratulate him because a player has resigned,” Gorosito said. “They are snitches.”

More prudent was Grondona about Maradona’s first dustup as coach.

“I’m sorry about Riquelme but I’m not surprised,” he told TyC Sports channel.

“In all families there are problems. In 30 years that I have been with AFA I have been through similar situations and everything has been resolved. This is football.”

Grondona said he will talk to Riquelme and Maradona to try and resolve their problems.

Maradona hinted he will choose Independiente midfielder Daniel Montenegro to replace Riquelme for upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Riquelme declined to comment on Thursday as he prepared for the league match on Sunday against Argentinos Juniors.

Ronaldo ready for more playing time

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Ronaldo quickly went back to work a day after grabbing front-page headlines across Brazil for scoring his first goal since returning to football, getting back to practice in hopes of earning more playing time in Corinthians’ upcoming matches.

Ronaldo’s photos were stamped in most Brazilian newspapers Monday after he came off the bench to score an equalizer three minutes into injury time in Corinthians’ 1-1 draw against rival Palmeiras in the Sao Paulo state championship on Sunday.

“Ronaldo reborn,” read a front-page headline in the Estado de S. Paulo newspaper.

“Never doubt!” the sports daily Lance said.

Ronaldo played 31 minutes in Sunday’s match, his second since undergoing the third major knee surgery of his career more than a year ago after an injury with AC Milan. Ronaldo also played 28 minutes against Itumbiara in the Brazilian Cup on Wednesday.

“This goal gives me a lot of confidence,” Ronaldo said. “But I know this is only the beginning, I still need to improve my physical condition.”

Ronaldo practiced normally along with the reserves on Monday, scoring several goals in a light training session and undergoing physical conditioning.

Team doctors say he is ready to play at least a half on Wednesday against Sao Caetano in the Sao Paulo state tournament.

“If you look at how Ronaldo moved around against Itumbiara and Palmeiras, you can see that he improved a lot from one match to the other,” doctor Bruno Mazziotti told the GloboEsporte Web site. “In this last match he dribbled and was able to shoot on goal, that’s the most important thing. Ronaldo is ready to play from 45 to 60 minutes.”

Corinthians coach Mano Menezes has not yet announced if Ronaldo will have a chance to play against Sao Caetano from the start or if he will stay on the bench again.

Fans were already lining up for tickets for Wednesday’s match at Pacaembu stadium in Sao Paulo, the first in Corinthians’ home city since the striker’s return.

Mazziotti said the three-time FIFA Player of Year will likely reach his peak form in three to four weeks.

“He still needs to lose 2 kilograms to 3 kilograms (4.5 pounds to 6.6 pounds),” Mazziotti said. “But he is feeling well and that gives him even more strength to keep working.”

The doctor said the biggest concern is to avoid muscle injuries, which are prone to athletes recovering from surgeries like the one Ronaldo underwent in February last year.

The 32-year-old Ronaldo had a lackluster debut against Itumbiara, but played well against Palmeiras on Sunday.

His goal just before time expired came after he freed himself from Palmeiras’ defenders at the far post and headed in a corner kick. He had already struck the crossbar with a powerful right-footed shot from the top of the area in the 78th minute.

After the goal, Ronaldo’s first since January 2008 with AC Milan, the striker ran toward Corinthians’ fans behind the goal and jumped onto a fence to celebrate. Fans joined Ronaldo on the other side of the fence, partially bringing it down.

Stadium officials said the goal was so important that they will name the fence the “Phenomenal Fence.” They expect the fence and the stadium in the interior city of President Prudent to become a tourist attraction.

Ronaldo, the all-time leading World Cup scorer with 15 goals, is trying to come back from a serious knee surgery for the third time in his career. In 1999, he tore up his right knee with Inter Milan and needed surgery, and a year later he twisted the same knee and was sidelined for several months after another surgery.

The striker recovered, however, helping Brazil win its fifth world title in 2002 in South Korea and Japan with two of his eight goals coming in the final against Germany.

Sweden to meet United States in Algarve Cup final

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Defending champion United States will meet 2001 winner Sweden in the final of the women’s Algarve Cup after each finished top of their tournament groups Monday.

Sweden upset Germany 3-2 to jump to No. 1 in Group A, while the Americans, who had already qualified for Wednesday’s final match, edged Norway 1-0 to stay top of Group B with a perfect nine points.

U.S. coach Pia Sundhage will meet her home country in the final at the Estadio do Algarve in southern Portugal.

“It will be awesome,” Sundhage said. “Winning the midfield is the key, plus keeping (Sweden striker) Lotta Schelin away from our box.”

The Americans, which hasn’t conceded a goal this year in the Algarve, have won the invitational tournament a record six times.

The Swedes racked up a 3-0 halftime lead after two goals from Schelin after an opening score by Nilla Fischer.

Two-time world champion Germany rallied with goals from Inka Grings and Kim Kulig but lost its first match in Group A.

The United States, which was guaranteed a place in the final after back-to-back wins over Denmark and Iceland last week, rested some key players and struggled to contain Norway but won after behind a 21st-minute goal from Megan Rapinoe. She beat two defenders and, with her back to goal, spun round and fired a low drive into the corner of the net.

Sweden made a sluggish start in the competition with a scoreless draw with China but then overcame Finland 1-0 in its second group game. It ended the round-robin stage with seven points, one ahead of Germany.

Also in Group A, China beat Finland 1-0. In Group B, Denmark defeated Iceland 2-0 and will play Germany for third place on Wednesday.

In Group C, which features teams not competing for the title, Portugal edged Austria 1-0 and Poland thrashed Wales 5-1.
