Xavi Hernandez leading the way for Spain
Spains record-breaking run of 15 straight wins likely wouldnt have been possible without Xavi Hernandez, the only player on the team to take the field in each of those matches.
The diminutive midfielder, who was voted player of the tournament in helping Spain win last years European Championship, has taken part in each of the three wins at this years Confederations Cup, and the 1.70-meter (5-foot-6) midfielder will surely play in Wednesdays semifinal match against the United States.
I didnt know about those statistics, but its something Im proud of, Xavi said Tuesday. Im happy for the team, for being a part of it, for being an important piece of this group. Its a privilege to share this record with my teammates.
Of the current Spain squad, only goalkeeper Iker Casillas has played more games for Spain than Xavi, who could make appearance No. 77 against the United States.
Although hes played one game more than Carles Puyol, Xavi gladly handed over the captaincy to his Barcelona teammate before a 2-0 win over South Africa. Xavi, who was voted man of the match for that final Group A game, said the team was more important than the armband.
He says exactly what he thinks. Hes a team player. Individual awards dont interest him, said Spain coach Vicente del Bosque, who called his 29-year-old midfielder a model player.
Xavi played in 52 of 60 games this season as Barcelona became the first Spanish team to win the treble - the league, domestic cup and Champions League. Now, Xavi is looking to lead Spain to a second international title in two years after the country went without silverware at a major tournament for 44 years.
We know the importance of this tournament and we want to reach the final, Xavi said.
Del Bosque continued Luis Aragones work after taking over last year, letting Xavi and Spains talented midfield continue to lead the attack just as Xavi does at Barcelona alongside Spain teammates Andres Iniesta and Sergio Busquets.
Xavi said he feels like hes at home with Spain, where the team camaraderie is better than ever.
Its one of our keys, but its clear that its also the collective sense of this team, the solidarity, the work, the humility, Xavi said. Everyone is important. You cant dismiss anybody.
