Emmanuel Adebayor scored his third goal in as many Premier League matches to give Manchester City a 1-0 win at Portsmouth on Sunday, maintaining the clubs perfect start to the season.

The Togo international headed in Gareth Barrys corner from close range in the 30th minute to earn Citys second away win - as many as achieved all last season.

My confidence is very high, Adebayor said. (City) believed in my strength, they believed in my ability. At the moment Im just working hard for the team and for the club.

Adebayor joined City from Arsenal in July as part of owner Sheikh Mansours $200 million spending-spree since May. It is paying off, with City now only three points behind league leaders Chelsea and Tottenham with a game in hand.

MADRID - Roberto Soldado scored a hat-trick to lead Getafe to a 4-1 win against Racing Santander in the first round of the Spanish league.

Getafe opened the scoring when Rafael Lopez scored in the 12th minute when he headed in a corner supplied by Adrian Gonzalez.

Gonzalez also set up Soldado for his first goal, a close-range shot in the penalty area in the 29th minute and the forward stretched the lead with his second five minutes later.

Santander midfielder Mehdi Lacen pulled one back in the 43rd minute but Soldado completed his hat trick in the 56th minute.

Malaga defeated Atletico Madrid 3-0 in a stadium where temperatures reached 100 degrees.

MILAN - Two goals from Diego helped Juventus to a 3-1 win away against AS Roma at Romes Olympic Stadium, while Fiorentina followed up its midweek qualification for the group stages of the Champions League by beating Palermo 1-0.

The Brazilian struck in each half to secure Juventus second win of the season before Felipe Melo scored in second half injury time to kill off any hopes Roma may have had of a late rally.

The result sent Roma to the bottom of the table with no points.

It was as hard as we thought it would be, Diego said, but you have to work hard to get anything against a side of this quality. There is a great atmosphere here at Juventus and with coach Ciro Ferrara and all the players, it has allowed me to settle into the team quickly.

PARIS - Jeremy Clement, Peguy Luyindula and Christophe Jallet all scored in Paris Saint-Germains 3-0 win over Lille to help the club clinch its third consecutive win in Ligue 1 on Sunday.

PSG, one of six teams that are still unbeaten this season, provisionally moved up to first place ahead of Lyon. The two teams each have 10 points from four games but PSG has a better goal record.

Also Sunday, Valenciennes scored its first points after three consecutive losses when striker Mamadou Samassa slotted home in the 86th minute in a 1-0 away win at Toulouse.

Toulouse missed several chances in the second half. Portuguese midfielder Paulo Machado hit the post after 53 minutes and then France striker Andre-Pierre Gignacs header was stopped on the line by Valenciennes defender Milan Bisevac three minutes later.

FRANKFURT - Mesut Oezil scored one goal and set up another to help Werder Bremen win 3-2 at Hertha Berlin in the fourth round of the Bundesliga.

Oezil scored against the run of play in the 57th minute, only minutes after Werder goalkeeper Tim Wiese had blocked a shot by Gojko Kacar. Oezil used a fast counterattack to put his team ahead after a pass from Marko Marin.

Tim Borowski doubled the lead in the 74th after another move by Marin had left the midfielder wide open to tap the ball in.

Three minutes later, Kacar broke through on the left and set up Lukasz Piszczek for Herthas first goal. But Oezil outplayed Herthas defense and passed to the unmarked Naldo, who drove home for 3-1. Patrick Ebert scored in injury time for Hertha.

AMSTERDAM - Former England manager Steve McClaren was sent off in FC Twentes 1-1 draw at Feyenoord in the Dutch league.

The Twente coach was dismissed for storming onto the field to protest referee Roelof Luinges decision to caution Cheick Tiote after the Ivorian midfielders 58th-minute foul on Karim El Ahmadi.

Roy Makaay scored an injury-time penalty for Feyenoord to cancel out Nicky Kuipers 74th-minute goal.

EDINBURGH, Scotland - Georgios Samaras scored with a header to give 10-man Celtic a 1-0 victory over Hibernian in the Scottish Premier League.

The Greece striker met a cross from Andreas Hinkel in the 41st minute to keep Celtic perfect after three matches, the same as defending champion Rangers, which beat Hamilton 4-1 on Saturday.

Celtic midfielder Aiden McGeady was sent off in the 62nd minute after receiving a second yellow card for diving after a touchline challenge from Hibs defender Paul Hanlon. McGeady had been booked in the first half for a foul on Derek Riordan.

Also Sunday, St. Johnstone drew 2-2 with Hearts after Martin Hardie curled in a free kick from 20 yards in injury time.

Aaron Lennon looks set to be recalled for Englands World Cup qualifier against Croatia when a victory would secure qualification for South Africa 2010.

The speedy winger impressed national manager Fabio Capello in the early weeks of the season, having helped Tottenham win its first four matches of the Premier League.

Lennons second goal of the season for Spurs clinched a 2-1 victory over Birmingham on Saturday, a day before Capello is due to announce his squad for the Sept. 9 qualifier against Croatia. England also meet Slovenia in a friendly next Saturday.

When a player is fit and in good form I put him in the squad, Capello said at a media round-table ahead of the squad announcement. Always the quick players are really important. But not only speed, because you have to be good technically.

Lennon can play one-to-one and is very dangerous because hes quick. He can shoot left, he can shoot right - he scored a goal against West Ham.

The 22-year-old Lennon last played for England in the victories over Slovakia in March and Ukraine in April, ending a two-year exile from the team.

He would occupy the right wing berth freed up by the injury to Arsenals Theo Walcott, whose pace and hat trick terrorized Croatia in a 4-1 victory last September.

He needs to understand his potential and have confidence in it, Capello said. He has to improve the confidence.

Lennons Tottenham teammate Jermain Defoe has also forced his way into Capellos plans by scoring six goals for club and country in four matches this month.

Physically he is in a good moment, Capello said. It is not just the goals, he is fast and has movement without the ball. He presses a lot. He is in a really good moment.

Two of Defoes goals came in Englands friendly against the Netherlands this month to recover a 2-2 draw.

Capello has no qualms about fielding a diminutive forward line of Defoe and Wayne Rooney.

Its not important to be tall or small, its important the movement you do, Capello said. When you have the possibility to score goals you have to be dangerous and also you must help the team when they need to win back the ball. This is a really important thing - I choose the players also for this. You have to participate in the play in every moment.

While Michael Owen is again in the preliminary squad, Manchester Uniteds new striker is not set to make the cut until he starts scoring more often, having hit the net just once competitively since joining the English champion.

He has not played a lot of games and he has to understand the style of United and integrate with the other players, Capello said. The players need to play. Full stop. And score.

England can make it eight wins out of eight in Group 6 by beating Croatia at Wembley. Securing World Cup qualification in that match would help to banish memories of when Slaven Bilics sides won in London in November 2007 to deny England a place at the 2008 European Championship.

We have improved a lot in confidence because now we play like a team and we can play against every country and we can beat them - every team, said Capello, who replaced Steve McClaren after that failed qualification campaign. They have a belief now.

David Beckham will be included in Sundays squad and Capello sees the 34-year-old midfielders recent sending off for the Los Angeles Galaxy as evidence of his enduring commitment to football.

He is always with us and that is important, Capello said. Hes played well.

What Capello is looking to work on, though, in his 10 days with the squad from Monday is eradicating the silly mistakes that saw England go 2-0 down to the Dutch before hitting back.

We have time to work with the back four and improve also the movement when we have to defend, the Italian manager said. The priority is to recover the sprit, the group, everything.

Cleveland Indians designated hitter Travis Hafner missed Saturdays game against the Orioles with soreness in his left shoulder, an injury that could keep him sidelined for several days.

If the shoulder is still sore Sunday, Hafner will be examined in Cleveland on Monday - an off day for the team.

It will be interesting to see how he feels tomorrow, Indians manager Eric Wedge said Saturday. If its the same tomorrow, (hes) definitely going to have it looked at.

Hafner had surgery on his right shoulder last October and had played in only 72 games this season while recovering from the operation. He began the season before being put on the disabled list from April 29-June 5 with shoulder soreness.

Hafner is batting .272 with 13 home runs and 38 RBIs.

CINCINNATI -Manny Ramirez hit the first of Los Angeles four homers, and the Dodgers blew a four-run lead Saturday before powering their way to an 11-4 victory that ended the Cincinnati Reds longest winning streak of the season at five games.

Ramirez connected on a two-run shot in the first inning off left-hander Matt Maloney (0-3), his first homer since Aug. 11. Rafael Furcal hit a tiebreaking solo shot in the fifth, and Matt Kemp and Orlando Hudson homered as the Dodgers pulled away.

Jeff Weaver (6-4) bailed out starter Charlie Haeger, who had a bad day with his knuckleball. Haeger squandered a 4-0 lead in less than three innings.

The NL West leaders improved to 21-4 against Cincinnati since 2006, their best mark against any NL team.

CHICAGO - Jake Fox hit his first career grand slam and Milton Bradley extended his hitting tear to help Chicago beat New York.

Fox finished with a career-high five RBIs. His bases-loaded homer finished Mets starter Bobby Parnell (3-7) during a six-run fifth inning, and he added an RBI double off Lance Broadway in the seventh.

Bradley, who was 3 for 3 on Friday, got hits in his first three at-bats and finished 3 for 4 with a walk. Booed earlier in the week, he is 11 for 20 with four walks during the first five games of the Cubs homestand.

Ryan Dempster (8-7) allowed four runs over six innings to get the win.

NEW YORK -Sergio Mitre shook off the rust and pitched sharply before getting struck by a line drive in the seventh inning, combining with Chad Gaudin on a one-hitter as the New York Yankees routed the slumping Chicago White Sox 10-0 Saturday.

Working for the first time since a relief outing eight days ago, Mitre (3-1) was perfect until Jim Thome ripped a bad-hop double past Gold Glove first baseman Mark Teixeira with one out in the fifth.

That was Chicagos only hit. Mitre left with a bruised right forearm after being nailed by A.J. Pierzynskis liner, and Gaudin closed with 2 2-3 hitless innings.

Alex Rodriguez hit his 576th homer, and Derek Jeter and Robinson Cano each got three of New Yorks 14 hits.

DETROIT - David Price had the longest outing of his young career, lasting 7 1-3 innings and allowed a run and five hits.

Price (7-6) struck out four and walked one. J.P. Howell pitched the ninth for his 16th save in 23 chances.

Price worked out of a jam in the third inning, striking out Curtis Granderson and getting Placido Polanco to pop out with runners on second and third. Price also struck out Miguel Cabrera with a runner on second to end the sixth.

Nate Robertson (1-1) made his first appearance after coming off the disabled list Friday.

Rangers 3, Twins 0

MINNEAPOLIS - Scott Feldman gave the Rangers another strong start, holding Minnesota scoreless into the sixth inning and helping Texas keep pace in the wild-card chase.

First-inning RBIs by Josh Hamilton and Ian Kinsler put the Rangers in front right away against Carl Pavano (11-10). For insurance, Ivan Rodriguez went deep in the top of the ninth - his first homer since rejoining the Rangers 11 days ago.

Feldman (14-4) walked four and gave up four hits in 5 2-3 innings, and the bullpen backed him up. Frank Francisco picked up his 19th save with a perfect ninth, preventing the second-place Twins from gaining any ground in the AL Central on Detroit. The Tigers, who lost to Tampa Bay, are 4 1/2 games ahead of Minnesota.

Texas, in range of its first trip to the postseason in 10 years, is 2 1/2 games behind Boston in the wild-card race.

Red Sox 3, Blue Jays 2

BOSTON - Clay Buchholz allowed just three singles in 8 1-3 innings, and Alex Gonzalez and Dustin Pedroias RBI singles made up for a Boston offense that sputtered in the early innings.

The Red Sox won for fifth time in six games and maintained their 2 1/2 game lead over Texas in the AL wild-card chase. The Rangers beat Minnesota, 3-0, on Saturday.

Buchholz (3-3) gave up one run, struck out nine and walked two three days before the two-year anniversary of his no-hitter over the Baltimore Orioles in his second big-league start.

Ricky Romero (11-6) gave up three runs on seven hits in 5 1-3 innings.

Steve Von Bergen and Alain Nef were recalled by Switzerland coach Ottmar Hitzfeld on Friday as he seeks the right combination in defense for crucial World Cup qualifiers against Greece and Latvia.

Hertha Berlins Von Bergen and Nef, from Italian club Triestina, replace Arsenals John Djourou, who injured his knee in training before a 0-0 draw with Italy in a friendly two weeks ago, and Philipp Degen of Liverpool.

Von Bergen could go directly into the starting lineup as Hitzfeld was concerned enough with Philippe Senderos struggle to cope with the Italy forwards.

Degen pays for his performance against Italy at right back, even though first-choice Stephan Lichtsteiner is suspended for the visit by Greece to Basel on Sept. 5.

Midfielder Gelson Fernandes could deputize in defense, while Eintracht Frankfurt captain Christoph Spycher returns to the squad after injury.

Greece lead the Swiss on goal difference in Group 2 with four matches to play, and St. Jakob Park is a 38,000 sellout for the showdown.

Switzerland beat the Greeks 2-1 in Piraeus last October when regular strike pairing Alex Frei and Blaise Nkufo both scored.

Hitzfelds team visits Latvia in Riga on Sept. 9.

Blackburn midfielder Vince Grella was robbed at knifepoint in his home in northwest England.

The Australia international follows players including Steven Gerrard, Emile Heskey, Roque Santa Cruz and Darren Fletcher in having his house broken into and burgled. All live in the same region.

The 29-year-old Grella was alone at home Sunday when he was robbed. Four masked thieves stole several items and his BMW car, which was later found nearby.
