Arsenal goalkeeper Fabianski out for 3 weeks

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Arsenal goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski was ruled out for three weeks Thursday after sustaining a thigh injury in his first match of the season following knee surgery.

The Poland international had made a solid comeback in the 2-1 victory over Liverpool as Arsenal advanced to the quarterfinals of the League Cup.

He will be out for three weeks, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said. Of course it is (a) big disappointment because he has just come back from injury.

Wenger will decide after Fridays training sessions whether to start with Vito Mannone or Manuel Almunia in goal in Saturdays derby against Tottenham.

Third-place Arsenal is above Tottenham on goal difference in the Premier League standings.

Bayern, Bremen, Schalke cruise in German Cup

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Bayern Munich crushed Eintracht Frankfurt 4-0 to storm into the quarterfinals of the German Cup on Wednesday.

Miroslav Klose scored twice, and Thomas Mueller scored one and set up two, including Luca Tonis for Bayern. It was Tonis first goal in a season that began late for the Italy striker because of an Achilles tendon injury.

Cup holder Werder Bremen and Schalke also cruised into the quarterfinals by beating second-division opposition by identical 3-0 scores.

Hoffenheim routed second-division Koblenz 4-0.

Playing at home without top striker Claudio Pizarro and some other regulars, Bremen eased past Kaiserslautern on goals from Petri Pasanen and Tim Borowski in the first half and substitute Torsten Oehrl in the second.

Schalke dominated at 1860 Munich and got goals from two defenders, with Benedikt Hoewedes notching two and Rafinha adding another.

Bayern beat Eintracht 2-1 at home four days ago in the Bundesliga with much more difficulty but romped over the hapless Frankfurt team away. Klose scored in the 14th after a chipped pass from Mark van Bommel and five minutes later picked up a pass from Mueller to double the lead.

The game was decided when Mueller scored in the 29th after a dreadful mistake from Eintracht defender Maik Franz.

Mueller shook off Franz to supply the cross for Tonis diving header in the 52nd.

Hoffenheim struggled until Sejad Salihovic curled in a free kick in the 50th. Vedad Ibisevic, Maicosuel and Marvin Compper added the other three goals.

On Tuesday, second-division Greuther Fuerth upset Stuttgart 1-0 and Borussia Dortmund lost 3-2 at third-division Osnabrueck. Cologne won 3-0 at Eintracht Trier, a fourth-division team, and Augsburg thrashed Duisburg 5-0 in match between two second-division sides.

Arsenal and Chelsea reach League Cup quarterfinals

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Arsenal and Chelsea overcame English Premier League opponents to reach the League Cup quarterfinals on Wednesday, with the Gunners beating Liverpool 2-1 and the Blues routing Bolton 4-0.

Fran Merida and Nicklas Bendtner scored for a mostly second-string Arsenal against similarly weakened opponents as rival managers Arsene Wenger and Rafa Benitez continued to rate Englands second cup competition low on their priorities.

But Premier League leader Chelsea fielded a strong side to easily beat visiting Bolton, while Manchester City also drew upon its experienced players to outclass Scunthorpe 5-1.

Liverpool was coming off a surprise 2-0 win over Manchester United and Arsenal a disappointing 2-2 draw at lowly West Ham, but the starting lineups on Wednesday showed a total of 20 changes from those matches to make predicting a result at Emirates Stadium especially tricky.

ROME - Brazilian striker Amauri scored twice as Juventus routed Sampdoria 5-1 to jump ahead of Genoa into second place in the Serie A.

Amauri found the target in the 26th and 62nd minutes, raising his tally to four in Juventus last three games. Giorgio Chiellini, Mauro Camoranesi and David Trezeguet also scored for Juventus and Giampaolo Pazzini had a goal for the visitors.

Everything worked to perfection, Juventus coach Ciro Ferrara said. We were coming off a few negative results but were bouncing back. This is Juventus real spirit.

Ten-man AC Milan squandered a two-goal lead in a 2-2 draw at Napoli, for which Luca Cigarini and German Denis scored in injury time after Filippo Inzaghi and Alexandre Pato had put Milan up 2-0 after only five minutes.

Inter Milan, which hosts Palermo in Thursdays lone match, leads with 22 points. Juventus was second with 21, Sampdoria has 20 and Parma was fourth with 17.

Freshly promoted Parma beat Bari 2-0 with goals from Valeri Bojinov and Alberto Paloschi, and Genoa edged Fiorentina 2-1 with a 74th-minute strike from Giandomenico Mesto.

Antonio Floro Flores scored twice as Udinese beat AS Roma 2-1 in a match in which both teams ended with 10 men.

FRANKFURT - Bayern Munich crushed Eintracht Frankfurt 4-0 to storm into the quarterfinals of the German Cup.

England promotes diversity in 2018 World Cup bid

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

England attempted to boost its chances of winning the right to host the 2018 World Cup with the announcement on Wednesday of an 11-member group dedicated to promoting the countrys diversity.

The group contains members of various pro-equality groups, including the head of the anti-racism Kick It Out organization and advocates for the rights of disabled and homosexual fans.

England 2018 Ltd. had already announced that former Chelsea defender Paul Elliott would head the so-called Inclusivity Advisory Group.

Englands multicultural society means there will be a home welcome for every competing nation and the work we do now to integrate these communities into the process will be invaluable, bid chairman David Triesman said. Our bid to FIFA will promote inclusivity and embrace all areas of the global football family.

England 2018 is committed to exceeding FIFAs expectations of a host nation and to providing a compelling legacy to go with it.

England is seeking to portray its diversity as one of its great strengths in bidding for the World Cup. About one in eight people living in England was born outside of the country and there are reputedly more than 300 languages spoken in London, which would host several matches including the final.

Elliott, whose career was ended early because of an injury in 1992, is a member of a similar panel advising organizers of the 2012 London Olympics. He was racially abused during his career by bigoted white fans.

He is a non-executive board member of the bid team and also works as trustee for Englands Professional Footballers Association, the players union.

Kick It Out director Piara Powar and Joyce Cook, the chair of the National Association of Disabled Supporters, are among the others on the group.

England is vying with seven other nations for the right to host the 2018 World Cup and nine others for the 2022 tournament. FIFA will award the hosting rights to both tournaments in December next year.

Villarreals Cazorla out indefinitely to injury

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Villarreal midfielder Santiago Cazorla will not play for an indefinite period due to a back injury which has flared up, according to chief team doctor Juan Albors.

The doctors have not given a date for his return.

We have taken him to a clinic in Jaen so he can do some rehabilitation sessions, Albors said on Tuesday. We hope it wont be long but we cant put a date on his recovery, although in theory surgery has been ruled out.

Villarreal might, however, see midfielder Ariel Ibagaza back from injury for the Spanish league game against Tenerife on Sunday.

Villarreal had its first win of the season at the weekend, beating Malaga 2-1.

Zaragoza feels full force of Barca Rubin backlash

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Anyone who thought that last weeks surprise loss at home to unheralded Rubin Kazan was the first crack in a crumbling Barcelona football team should have been at Camp Nou on Sunday.

Pep Guardiolas classy players provided the answer with a 6-1 thrashing of Real Zaragoza and could easily have scored at least three more goals. It was a strong warning to their rivals in the Spanish and Champions Leagues that they are not going to give up their titles easily.

If this is how Barcelona reacts to a shock defeat, then the likes of Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Manchester United and Premier League leader Chelsea should take note.

Lets face it, all Rubin did was catch Guardiolas team on an off day.

Yet the 2-1 Champions League loss prompted suggestions in the media that Barcelona was nowhere near as strong as the team that won three trophies last season when it became Spanish and European champions.

With Real Madrid bulking up its squad with huge signings such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Karim Benzema and Xabi Alonso, Barcelona was under far more pressure to hold onto its Spanish league title, let alone the European crown.

Critics questioned the club for releasing the freescoring Samuel Etoo and replacing him with the immensely talented but unpredictable Zlatan Ibrahimovic. They pointed to lapses of concentration in defense and suggested Lionel Messis form had dropped because of Argentinas shaky form in qualifying for the World Cup.

Another loss at home would have added to those doubts. But Guardiolas team brushed Zaragoza aside and appeared unstoppable as it moved into a three-point lead at the top of the Spanish standings.

Ibrahimovic scored twice - once with a powerful free kick and the other from close range - and had another disallowed. Messi repeatedly cut through the Zaragoza defense with his dribbling, had two shots blocked by the keeper and finally chipped the ball over him for a goal.

Andres Iniesta and Xavi Hernandez controlled the midfield and joined in the frequent spells of one-touch interpassing and Seydou Keita scored three goals in an overall performance which was applauded by club president Joan Laporta.

We put in a perfect performance and we were clearly deserved winners, he said. The players were especially motivated after Tuesdays result and they showed tonight that that was just a slip up.

Theres a long way to go in the league yet. We are playing well and with the same attitude we showed last year - humility and sacrifice. We are on the right track.

Guardiola had special praise for Messi and Ibrahimovic, who have combined for 13 goals.

Leo is never in doubt, he said. Hes a guy who just loves playing football. Its important that we are by his side and he knows that we will always be there whatever happens.

He said Ibrahimovic was settling into the team and becoming stronger and more dynamic.

Xavi said he was confident the team would get over the loss to Rubin.

I already said that the game the other day was just one of those things, he said. People tend to be guided by results, but we know that if we continue playing like that (against Zaragoza) then we will almost always win. The victory helped show that we are doing things well, has helped build confidence, and has made us league leaders.

Guardiola is likely to rest some of his front line players when Barcelona begins its defense of the domestic cup on Wednesday against Cultura Leonesa, a third-division club which has played only one season in topflight football.

Then comes a visit to mid-standings Osasuna in the league and a chance to make up for its loss to Rubin when it travels to Kazan Nov. 4.

Barcelona is in a very tight Champions League group with Italian champion Inter Milan and Ukraines Dynamo Kiev, with only one point separating first and last. Its possible that Guardiolas team needed that loss to Rubin to shrug off any hints of complacency and sharpen up its act.

If thats the case and Zaragoza was the first team to feel the full force of its response, then the rest of Europe should beware.
