AC Milan tops Chicago Fire 1-0

Clarence Seedorf scored two minutes into the second half to give AC Milan a 1-0 victory against the Chicago Fire in an exhibition match Sunday night in front of a sellout crowd at Toyota Park.

Seedorf battled his way through the Fire defense and into the box. Fire goalkeeper Andrew Dykstra challenged him, but the seasoned midfielder beat Dykstra with a low ball into the right side of the net.

Fire midfielder Patrick Nyarko attempted a bicycle kick in the 72nd minute, but also struck the head of defender Luca Antonini. Nyarko received a yellow card. Antonini eventually returned to play.

Chicagos Julio Martinez drilled the ball on goal off of a corner kick attempt in the 90th minute, but it was blocked by Dida.

Michael Stephens scored his first career goal and Los Angeles extended its shutout streak to 456 minutes in a 2-0 victory over the Columbus Crew on Saturday, leaving the Galaxy as the only unbeaten team in Major League Soccer.

Carey Talley scored on a stoppage time penalty kick past defender-turned-goalkeeper Dario Delgado to lift D.C. United, after goaltender Zach Thornton was sent off for his challenge on D.C.s Santino Quaranta in front of the goal.

Zach Schilawskis fifth goal of the season, a header on a cross from Shalrie Joseph, gave the Revolution a victory over the short-handed Red Bulls.

New York was forced to play much of the second half without defender Carlos Mendes and midfielder Roy Miller, who were sent off with red cards. Mendes earned his in the 56th minute for a flagrant trip of Marko Perovic, and Miller in the 75th minute for a foul on Zak Boggs.

New Englands victory snapped a seven-match (0-5-2) winless streak, during which the Revolution (3-6-2) managed only four goals. They are 8-0-6 in their last 14 against New York.

Late winner gives Spain 3-2 win over Saudi Arabia

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

European champion Spain scrambled a 3-2 victory over Saudi Arabia in injury time, while crowd trouble by Serbia supporters marred their teams surprise 1-0 loss to New Zealand in World Cup warmup games Saturday.

On a day in which the United States came from behind to defeat Turkey in Philadelphia, a strong Spanish lineup fell behind to Osama Hawsawis 16th-minute strike at the Austrian city of Innsbruck, where the team is training at altitude for the World Cup in South Africa.

After goals by David Villa and Xabi Alonso, the Saudis came back to make it 2-2 on a goal by Mohammed Al-Sahlawi, and nearly earned an unexpected draw with one of the World Cup favorites, before substitute Fernando Llorente headed home the winner in injury time.

The victory allowed Spain defender Carlos Marchena to surpass Brazil great Garrincha for a record 50 straight games without defeat.

Despite missing four Bayern Munich stars who rested after the Champions League final loss to Inter Milan, Germany outplayed Hungary 3-0 in Budapest.

Lukas Podolski fired home a fifth-minute penalty shot, Mario Gomez added a second in the 69th and Cacau made it 3-0 in the 73rd for the three-time World Cup champions.

In a minor surprise, New Zealand beat Serbia 1-0 in the southern Austrian city of Klagenfurt on a 23rd-minute strike by Shane Smeltz. He finished off a counterattack with a low shot for his 16th goal in 29 appearances for a victory that will boost the Kiwis.

In scenes that might alarm World Cup organizers, however, the match was briefly interrupted shortly before the end when Serb fans threw fireworks and got onto the field.

The Serbs are in one of the toughest groups, facing Germany, Australia and Ghana, and their inability to score against one of the weakest of the 32 teams will do little for confidence.

Heading for only their second World Cup, the Kiwis are preparing to take on defending champion Italy, Paraguay and Slovakia in group play in South Africa, and had the chance to see one of their opponents in the same stadium.

Slovakia earned a 1-1 against Cameroon, with Kamil Kopunek giving Slovakia a sixth-minute lead and Eyong Enoh punishing some sloppy defending to knot the game in the 83rd.

Slovakia plays New Zealand, Paraguay and Italy at the World Cup, while Cameroon is grouped with Japan, Denmark and the Netherlands.

Samuel Etoo, who has threatened to walk out of Cameroons World Cup team after criticism by former star Roger Milla, missed the game. The striker was given time to rest after winning the Champions League final with Inter Milan last week.

There are warmup games almost every day in the coming week before the World Cup kicks off on June 11 in Johannesburg. Among Sundays matches, England and Japan meet in the Austrian city of Graz, where both are practicing at high altitude; Paraguay plays Ivory Coast; and France, Nigeria, Mexico and South Korea are also in action.

US expects to use most regulars against Turkey

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Theres a bit of chaos when a national team comes together.

“We have own idea about things at Everton,” U.S. goalkeeper Tim Howard said. “And AC Milan have their own ideas. And Rennes have their own ideas. And Watford.”

By the time of the June 12 World Cup opener against England, all these players from different clubs will form a coherent team, and that process will accelerate Saturday when the United States plays Turkey in its last game before leaving for South Africa.

More than 50,000 tickets have been sold for the sendoff match at Lincoln Financial Field. Most starters were rested for Tuesdays 4-2 loss to the Czech Republic, among them Landon Donovan, Clint Dempsey, Jozy Altidore and Howard.

“Well have a team that I think will be close to our regular team,” U.S. coach Bob Bradley said Friday.

Turkey, a 2002 World Cup semifinalist that failed to qualify for this years tournament, is a physical side with a reputation for rough play. The Turks are ranked 29th in the world, 15 places below the U.S. and four above the Czechs.

It is a far better test than four years ago, when the last three World Cup warmups were against Morocco, Venezuela and Latvia.

“We looks for these games to fine tune things. I dont think playing teams of lesser quality is going to help us, at all,” defender Oguchi Onyewu said. “Its going to help us pinpoint certain weaknesses or things we have to work on as a group.”

Onyewu, who is with AC Milan, returned Tuesday night from October surgery to repair a torn pateller tendon in his left knee and appeared rusty, getting outjumped by Tomas Sivok for a header on the first Czech goal. Onyewu could form the back line with Watfords Jay DeMerit, out since April 17 with an abdominal strain; and Rennes Carlos Bocanegra, sidelined since sports hernia surgery on May 5. Jonathan Spector or Steve Cherundolo could play on the right.

“Goochs situation is obviously a little different than the situations with Carlos and Jay,” Bradley said. “In Goochs case we all know that that type of injury, being out that long, now when you come back, getting games, theres little hurdles to get over in terms of just plays where now the reaction speed is different, and youve just got to be able to make a play without thinking about it. I think if I look back over the time that weve been in this camp, including the last game, weve seen good progress.”

DeMerit and Bocanegra have been in full training for a week and appear ready for the field.

The U.S. team leaves Sunday from Washington-Dulles International Airport and arrives in Johannesburg the following day. Once in South Africa, the Americans play Australia in another exhibition June 5 before the first competitive match between the U.S. and England since the 1-0 American upset at the 1950 World Cup.

“Its going to take this game and all the preparation games and a lot of training, as well, in the next couple weeks to make sure that were on the same page,” DeMerit said. “Tomorrows a great place to start.”

Of particular interest will be how Bradley uses Clint Dempsey. With Charlie Davies still sidelined from injuries in an October car crash that nearly killed him, Dempsey could be pushed up to forward alongside Altidore.

Or Bradley could opt to start Edson Buddle or Herculez Gomez, the two forwards who came from below the radar a few months ago to make the 23-man roster Wednesday.

Gomezs mobile phone has been ringing. And ringing. And ringing.

“Its drained right now. Mentally its been overwhelming,” he said. “Its good that were back here training. Once youre back here training and you get that first sprint in, and you get that rush of adrenaline pumping, you forget about all the kind of circus that surrounds all this.”

Turkey already has signed Guus Hiddink to take over as coach on Aug. 1, and hes traveling with the team.

“We like to consider it as a serious game,” he said.

Thats exactly what Howard wants. Hed like to develop flowing communication with his defenders, and he has only two matches to work out problems.

“Youre talking about an exercise that takes a whole lot of time, and we dont have a whole lot of time to do it,” he said. “Its vitally important that I get things together and Im pulling the strings.”

Sort of like The Godfather.

“A lot of it is body language. A lot of it is timing and familiarity,” he said. “Its just something that you dont do overnight.”

NOTES: The U.S. will play Brazil in its first game after the World Cup, on Aug. 10 at the New Meadowlands Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.

Big demand for World Cup tickets with 2 weeks left

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

The man in the yellow and green uniform raised his arms in jubilation, as if he had just scored a goal for his beloved South African national team.

“We are now finished! We got our tickets! Everything is sorted out,” exulted Aden Lahood, displaying his prized purchase of World Cup tournament seats.

He was one of about 700 people who had mobbed a building in suburban Johannesburg during a frustrating, chaotic day of long lines and computer crashes Friday as a total of 160,000 tickets - including those for the semifinal and final games - went on sale in South Africa two weeks before the start of the World Cup.

For thousands of South Africans, the wait has been long but worth it.

Despite the computer glitches and some marketing flaws, World Cup organizers are likely to sell almost all the tickets for the tournament - thanks in large part to local fans.

FIFA, the World Cups governing body, said there was a “massive response” from buyers, and by 5 p.m. Friday, nearly 60,000 tickets had been sold. Seats were no longer available for several matches, including all three of the preliminary round games involving South Africas team and the July 11 final.

Thousands of people had spent a night in line - some were queued up since Wednesday - in ticket centers in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Soweto.

In the upscale northern Johannesburg suburb of Sandton, there was pushing and shoving in the line, and police tried to keep order. One official got on a bullhorn and threatened to keep the ticket center closed unless people maintained order in the line that stretched 40-50 yards (meters) down the sidewalk.

FIFA officials added to the frustration when they announced to the crowd that the computer system had crashed.

“Apparently, everyone is logging on at the same time. It must be an international thing, worldwide,” Lahood said. “But weve been through it, its done now, everything is sorted, Im happy.”

FIFA issued a statement confirming “significant delays” and apologized to fans for the “regrettable situation.”

Chilly weather in Cape Town may have been responsible for only a few hundred subdued fans lining up there. In the township of Soweto, about 1,000 people lined up, with some minor pushing and shoving.

FIFA has made huge strides since the final phase of ticket sales began on April 15. Before then, a half-million tickets were unsold, and World Cup officials were on the brink of a PR disaster.

Empty seats would tell a global TV audience of billions that the tournament has not been a success.

An extra 90,000 tickets that had been returned by FIFA and its various sponsors to South African organizers were part of the 160,000 on sale Friday. Danny Jordaan, head of South Africas organizing committee, called it “the last big inventory available for the public.”

South Africa has used the slogan “Once in a Lifetime” to excite its own fans that the World Cup had finally come to their continent for the first time - and they have responded by buying more than 1.3 million tickets. FIFA said it has sold more than 96 percent of the total 2.88 million tickets available, and will match the 97 percent sales mark for the last World Cup in Germany.

The June 11 opening match between South Africa and Mexico at Johannesburgs central Soccer City stadium, is a confirmed sellout of 94,700.

Seats in all different price ranges were on sale - from about $20 for early round games, the lowest priced tickets which can only be purchased by South Africans, up to $600 for a semifinal game and $900 for the final.

FIFA had faced some criticism for charging the high prices in some categories - well beyond the reach of ordinary South Africans. And it has also only sold a disappointing 40,000 tickets on the rest of the continent, after asking African fans outside the host country to pay the same prices as the rest of the world.

“If youre making it Africas World Cup, you make sure you have a significant representation of African fans at the games,” said Pat Rishe, an associate professor of economics at Webster University in St. Louis and a director of the consulting firm Sportsimpacts.net.

Most of the unsold tickets are in the most expensive of the four pricing categories at the World Cup.

“I am desperately trying to get tickets for the semifinals and final and also the opening game,” said 18-year-old Daniel Shalem. “I am really hoping to squeeze in there.”

“The quantity of tickets I want,” Shalem said, “doesnt allow for me to buy category one tickets. It would be far too expensive.”

The latest projections say only 360,000 foreign fans are to visit South Africa, down from the 450,000 originally predicted, but there may be hope for those remaining high-end tickets, too.

“After the initial surge when the draw was announced in December, weve seen more interest in flights and hotels,” said Danny Talbot of the sports division of Thomas Cook travel in Britain.

“The ever-increasing confidence in England being successful in their group means that were now seeing fans requesting trips that give them the best chance of seeing the team in the latter stages” of the tournament, he said.

The U.S. leads the way with more than 130,000 tickets sold to date.

A late surge from the traditionally strong European market could result in a complete sellout - unthinkable a month ago.

FIFA figures if it sold 430,000 tickets in the six weeks since April 15, and almost 60,000 in a day, two weeks could be enough to sell the final 100,000 tickets.

Portugal Ivory Coast Betting – Portugal Take Advantage Of Shaky Ivorian Goalkeeping

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer betting

Online betting players are anxiously awaiting the opening of Group G, which has been tabbed as the toughest group in the World Cup. Portugal and the Ivory Coast aren’t afraid to play a wide-open game, which should make for an exciting match, but the Ivorians’ shakiness at the back will give Portugal the edge.

What: World Cup Betting
When: Tuesday, June 15th, 10:00 AM ET
Where: Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, Port Elizabeth
Key Stats: This is the first meeting for these two countries

The Storyline

The “Group of Death” kicks off with what could be the best match of the group stages as both teams like to attack. Captains Cristiano Ronaldo and Didier Drogba are very familiar with each other due to Ronaldo’s days in the Premiership, and both are consensus top-10 players in Europe, if not the world. Both are also considered solid darkhorse bets to win the World Cup, but with Brazil in Group G as well, there could be room for only one.

Who Has The Edge On Offense: Portugal vs Ivory Coast Betting

Portugal surprisingly struggled to score goals in qualification, and Ronaldo didn’t find the net once, although he was a constant threat and should raise his game in South Africa after a great season at Real Madrid. However, the player to watch may be Nani, who was Ronaldo’s understudy at Manchester United and flourished when his countryman left for Spain. Nani was behind only Simao in terms of goals, and with all the attention paid to Ronaldo, he could find himself with some extra space.

Drogba is arguably the best striker in Europe with Chelsea, possessing an alarming combination of pace, power and skill. He’s joined by club teammate Solomon Kalou, who was inconsistent at Chelsea this season. However, Boubacar Sonogo and Sekou Cisse aren’t in the squad due to injuries, and word has emerged that Drogba will hold off having a hernia operation until after the tournament, which is something to keep an eye on.

Edge: Draw

Who Has The Edge In Defense: Portugal vs Ivory Coast Betting

Portugal’s defense doesn’t get that much credit because of their attacking talent, but Pepe’s fitness regarding a knee injury is a worry. Bruno Alves and Ricardo Carvalho are dependable in the middle, but they’re going to need Raul Meireles to be a shield in front of keeper Eduardo and the back four if Portugal is going to claim a best sportsbook win in this match.

The Ivorian defense is led by the brother duo of Yaya and Kolo Toure, and Yaya provides the muscle in Barcelona’s midfield so Xavi and others can get forward. Kolo was probably Manchester City’s best defender in a wild year, and Emmanuel Eboue will also be a factor. Midfielder Didier Zokora has to be more disciplined when to go forward, because the Ivory Coast has a shaky keeper in Boubacar Barry.

Edge: Portugal

Notable Injuries – Portugal vs Ivory Coast Betting

Portugal doesn’t have any major injuries to their squad with the exception of Pepe (knee), who has been out for five months now.

Drobga (hernia) will try to battle through his injury, but missing out on the injury-prone Cisse (thigh) as well as Cisse (toe) will really put pressure on Drogba.

Edge: Portugal

Totals – Portugal vs Ivory Coast Betting

Both teams love to attack, and they know what’s at stake: pole position to move onto the next round. With the offensive talent on display, there could be fireworks to kick off Group G.

Edge: Over 2.5

Portugal vs Ivory Coast Sports betting & Outlook

Portugal is a +130 favorite in this crucial encounter, with the Ivorians coming in at +210, while a draw comes at +220. You just get the feeling that this won’t end in a draw as both teams have players that can deliver a late goal. The question is, how healthy is Drogba? We’re not betting that he’s more hurt than he is, but he has played a lot of soccer for Chelsea over the last year or two. Meanwhile, Ronaldo was hurt at the beginning of the year, but he ended the season with a bang. We’re also not too sure about Barry at the back of the Ivory Coast, and that could be their downfall.

Serbia Ghana Betting – Serbia Open Up 2010 Campaign With Win Over Injury-Ravaged Ghana

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer betting

Online betting players have been watching for injuries, and arguably no team has been hit harder than Ghana, both up front and in midfield. They surely won’t have their best players even close to full fitness, if at all, when they meet Serbia in the first match of Group D, and the Serbs will take advantage of this.

What: World Cup Betting
When: Sunday, June 13th, 10:00 AM ET
Where: Loftus Versfeld Stadium, Pretoria
Key Stats: Serbia beat Ghana 3-1 in 1997, but as the former Yugoslavia

The Storyline

Neither team will be mentioned among the global elite, but Serbia and Ghana have the tools to make it difficult on anyone they face. This will be Serbia’s third time in the World Cup since Yugoslavia split up, while Ghana will be making only their second appearance in the world’s biggest tournament, but in a group with Germany and Australia, both have their eye on the second round.

Who Has The Edge On Offense: Serbia vs Ghana Betting

Milan Jovanovic emerged as his team’s best threat during qualification, and his weapons as a striker come in handy when he plays on the flanks for his country. His versatility will come in handy later in games when Serbia can move him forward and add another attacking player. Serbia has another interesting player in Nikola Zigic, who is an intriguing target at 6’8” and poses a unique set of problems to the opposition. Dejan Stankovic is also a threat from midfield, coming off a treble-winning season at Inter Milan.

Ghana lost Junior Agogo to a knee injury about a month ago, and he leads all active Ghanians with 11 goals in 25 matches. Matthew Amoah and Prince Tagoe will be counted on to pick up the slack, and the midfield is capable of goals from Michael Essien, captain Stephen Appiah, Sulley Muntari and Laryea Kingston. But will Essien and Appiah even be available to play?

Edge: Serbia

Who Has The Edge In Defense: Serbia vs Ghana Betting

Branislav Ivanovic and Nemanja Vidic, who ply their trade at Chelsea and Manchester United respeictively, form a powerful duo in front of keeper Vladimir Stojkovic, and the defenders will have to be stout as Serbia doesn’t really know who their starter will be. Stojkovic hasn’t played regularly with his club team, Wigan Athletic, and Zeljko Brkic, who doesn’t have that much experience.
Ghana’s keeper situation is fine with Richard Kingson, who has won the most caps in the history of the Ghana soccer team, while Eric Addo, John Mensah and John Pantsil have experience together. But their fate lies in midfield, where Appiah and Essien have the ability to take over games on offense, but especially on defense with their touch tackling and endurance. Appiah has just started playing again after a knee injury kept him out for most of the season, and Essien will know very soon if he will be able to play. The effectiveness of Essien and Appiah is the biggest factor in Ghana’s best sportsbook odds in South Africa.

Edge: Draw

Notable Injuries – Serbia vs Ghana Betting

Serbia doesn’t have any major injuries to worry about.

Appiah (knee) hasn’t played 90 full minutes yet this season, while Essien (knee) has been out since February. The loss of Agogo (knee) was also big for Ghana.

Edge: Serbia

Totals – Serbia vs Ghana Betting

Ghana may be apt to hold back on attacking if Essien and Appiah are out, while the Serbs aren’t an offensive juggernaut, so we’re taking the under here.

Edge: Under 2.5

Serbia vs Ghana Sports betting & Outlook

Serbia is a +120 favorite to take this match, while Ghana is listed at +230, and a draw comes in at +220. Ghana would have much better odds if their midfielders were healthier. Essien and Appiah are the best players that Ghana has, and they’re not nearly as intimidating without them at 100%. Serbia has a solid manager in Radomir Antic, who has coached at high-profile places like Real Madrid and Barcelona, and he has them playing an efficient and disciplined game. It’s a shame that Ghana isn’t at 100%, but that’s not Serbia’s problem as they’ll roll to a sports betting win in this contest.

Dallas-Chicago ends 1-1

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

David Ferreira of Dallas and Chicagos Brian McBride scored in the first half, before their MLS clash petered out to a lifeless 1-1 draw on Thursday.

The game featured only five shots, three by Chicago. Dallas had the only shot in the second half.

Dallas went ahead in the sixth minute when Colombian playmaker Ferreira ran onto a long looping ball.

The tracking defender stumbled, Ferreira dribbled around him then sidestepped another and shot into the top left corner past Fire goalkeeper Andrew Dykstra.

The equalizer came when Justin Mapp played a long throughball to former Everton and Fulham striker McBride, who got behind his defender and crisply headed past Dallas goalkeeper Kevin Hartman.

Chicago almost snatched it in stoppage time at the end of the match. A corner reached the far post, where Baggio Husidic and Dasan Robinson each got a foot on the ball but neither could get a clear shot on goal.

The Fire, who failed to score in two international friendlies last week, has a four-game winless streak in MLS and Dallas has gone three without victory.

Obama wishes US soccer team luck in World Cup

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Barack Obama gave the U.S. World Cup team a presidential sendoff, greeting players at the White House on Thursday along with Vice President Joe Biden and former President Bill Clinton.

“I just want to say how incredibly proud we are of the team,” Obama said. “Everybodys going to be rooting for you. And although sometimes we dont remember it here in the United States, this is going to be the biggest world stage there is. And youre going to be representing all of us.”

Biden intends to attend the U.S. opener against England on June 12 in Rustenburg, South Africa. Clinton is honorary chairman of the bid committee trying to bring the World Cup back to the U.S. in 2018 or 2022.

“Were going to be proud of what you do when you get to South Africa, and you will have somebody in the Oval Office whos going to be watching ESPN to make sure that things are going OK,” Obama said.

Biden also gave the players a tour of the White House.

“I had been there once before with the Olympic team. This time around, it was pretty awesome.” goalkeeper Tim Howard said.

While their soccer skills got the players into the White House, it was their fashion sense that caught the eye of the leaders. Clinton told the players he wants to join the team just for their stylish tan dress shoes. Obama agreed they were “good-looking” shoes.

“They had a sense of humor and gave us a real nice tour,” forward Jozy Altidore said. “Overall, it was just an exciting part of the day.”

After the White House visit, the team traveled to Philadelphia and worked out at the Eagles NovaCare Complex ahead of Saturdays exhibition against Turkey at Lincoln Financial Field. The team leaves the following day for South Africa.

More than 48,000 tickets have been sold for Saturdays game, the next-to-last warmup before the U.S. opens against England.

“Weve been working really hard to get ready for the World Cup,” midfielder Clint Dempsey said. “I think the team is confident. It would be nice to go into South Africa with a solid performance against Turkey. Well be ready to play Saturday, and I think the guys on this team believe in each other and what were trying to accomplish.”

While Howard, Dempsey and Landon Donovan were given the night off for Tuesdays 4-2 loss to the Czech Republic in East Hartford, Conn., the lineup Saturday should be closer to the teams first-choice selection.

The other first-round games, against Slovenia on June 18 and versus Algeria on June 23, are too far off to think about.

“Were focused on Saturday, first and foremost,” Howard said. “Then were focused on England. We cant worry about what might happen beyond that. I think were in the right frame of mind as we get ready to start the World Cup.”
