Spain happy to take ugly route at World Cup

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Happy to reach the last 16 of the World Cup, Spain is ready to abandon its attacking playing style if it means going even further into the tournament.

Spain labored to a 2-1 win over 10-man Chile on Friday to take top spot in Group H and set up an elimination match against Portugal in Cape Town on Tuesday.

The European champions usually attractive passing was mostly ditched in favor of a slower tempo, physical affair.

Midfielder Andres Iniesta said “this is a World Cup and were going to try and do the best we can even though sometimes a rival makes it complicated for you and you have to change your way.”

Clean sweep for South America at WCup

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Chiles progress to the second round of the World Cup means that every South American team made it out of the group stage for the first time in twenty years.

Chile, despite a 2-1 defeat to Spain Friday, joined Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay in the round of 16.

Thats the first time each South American representative has done so since the World Cup in Italy in 1990.

However the achievement of the class of 2010 is superior to that of 1990 when Brazil was the only team to top its group while Argentina, Colombia and Uruguay all progressed despite finishing third.

This time, all the South American sides bar Chile topped their groups.

The 1990 tournament had 24 teams in six groups, with the four best third-placed sides going into the round of 16. Since 1998 when the tournament was expanded to 32 teams, only the top two in each group go through.

Its possible that South America will make up half the quarterfinal lineup in a weeks time as the only all-South American clash in the round of 16 is Brazil-Chile. Uruguay faces South Korea, while Argentina confronts Mexico in the second round for the second straight World Cup, and Paraguay takes on Japan.

Add in the United States and theres a distinct American feel to the round of 16. Honduras was the only team from the Americas not to progress from the group stage.

In stark contrast to South Americas achievements, Europe has suffered its worst showing in the group stage since the World Cup was expanded to 32 teams. Only six of its 13 participants made it through the group stage, with 2006 finalists France and Italy the biggest casualties.

Europes numbers will definitely be reduced to three by the quarterfinal stage as they all play each other. Germany takes on England, while Spain faces off against Portugal, and Slovakia confronts the Netherlands.

Though Europes teams may not be faring as strongly as they usually do, it will be no surprise if one of them makes it to the final at Soccer City in Johannesburg on July 11.

Europe has had a finalist at every World Cup since the second tournament in 1934. In 1950 there was no final as such, though the last match between Brazil and Uruguay involved the only two teams who could win the trophy - Uruguay shocked the footballing world and 200,000 Brazilians by winning the match and the tournament.

However, history suggest the winning team will be South American. No European side has won the World Cup outside the confines of its continent. Brazil is the only team ever to win outside its continent, in Sweden in 1958 and in Japan/South Korea in 2002.

Honduras Switzerland Betting – Misfiring Offenses Will Make For A Group H Draw

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer betting

Online betting players are gearing up for an interesting conclusion to Group H, where Honduras and Switzerland will clash in their Round 1 finales. Both teams have had problems finding the back of the net so far in South Africa, and World Cup Betting players should bank on a draw on Friday.

What: World Cup Betting
When: Friday, June 25th, 2:30 PM ET
Where: Free State Stadium, Bloemfontein
Key Stats: This is the first meeting for these two sides

The Storyline

The Swiss have everything to play for as they’re tied on three points with Spain in Group H, and not only do they need someone to Spain to lose, they need to improve their goal difference, which is currently at 0, while Spain is at +1. Honduras can make it with a big win, and a Spain loss, but it’s not very likely as they have yet to score.

Who Has The Edge On Offense: Honduras Switzerland Betting

The Hondurans have been toothless throughout the World Cup so far, failing to get many good scoring chances and settling for shots from the perimeter. Midfielder Ramon Nunez has been trying to push the team forward, but they were rolled over in a 2-0 loss to Spain and spent most of the match trying to chase the likes of Xavi around the field. Captain Amado Guevera, at 34 years old, looks like he’s off the pace a bit.

The Swiss attack has been hurt by Alexander Frei, whose injured ankle allowed him to play just 42 minutes in a 1-0 loss to Chile, and 33-year-old midfielder Hakan Yakin is coming off the bench now. Eren Derdiyok and Gelson Fernandes, who scored the match-winner against Spain, are a young duo who should lead the Swiss into Brazil 2014, but they’re too green right now.

Edge: Draw

Who Has The Edge In Defense: Honduras Switzerland Betting

It’s not fair to say that Honduras was embarrassed by Spain, but they had no business being on the pitch with them. The defense constantly lost track of David Villa, who scored twice and had a number of other chances, and the midfield had no idea how to cut off Xavi, who ran the middle of the field for Spain. Honduras’ weak spot before coming to South Africa was the back of the team, but they were exposed by Spain and Chile.

Switzerland set a World Cup record of 557 shutout minutes before Chile scored on them, but they battled gamely after midfielder Valon Behrami was sent off after 31 with a harsh red card. The Swiss were also missing defender Phillipe Senderos, who like Frei, has an ailing ankle and he may miss the rest of the World Cup, however long that will be for Switzerland. Still, the Swiss are an organized and disciplined group at the back, and that’s the reason that they’re even in this position.

Edge: Switzerland

Notable Injuries – Honduras Switzerland Betting

Wilson Palacio (muscular) has been playing through an injury, but he hasn’t been effective, and the same goes for David Sauzo (thigh).

Senderos (ankle) is definitely out, while Frei (ankle) probably won’t play a part as well.

Edge: Draw

Totals – Honduras Switzerland Betting

With the problems these two have been having when it comes to scoring goal, any more than two in this match would be a massive surprise.

Pick: Under 2.5

Honduras Switzerland Sports betting & Outlook

Switzerland is a -200 sports betting favorite in their first meeting with Honduras, who comes in at +550, and a draw is rated at +300. Neither team is able to sit back in this match, but we’re not even sure that either has the weapons to score. With the exception of Senderos, the important injuries for both teams have come from their attacking players, which doesn’t leave much else on the bench. A draw is the smart sports betting play here, and both need a lot of help in the Spain-Chile game to make it to the next round.

Bet World Cup: Draw +300

Spain Chile Betting – Spain Will Reign Over Chile

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer betting

Spain had a very disappointing opening contest and because of it, they have to play well in their third World Cup groups stage game to make sure that they advance. They lost to Switzerland, who like them, has three points. The only difference is the Swiss get to play Honduras while Spain has to play the group leaders in Chile. Should Spain fail to win, World Cup betting fans may see the Euro 2008 Champions heading home early.

Group D

Team Spain – Betting Preview

Spain came to life in their second match against Honduras, firing 22 shots on net and finally breaking through with a pair of them. David Villa scored two dazzling goals and
Spain finally came to life. This is a team that is far too talented to be held off the score sheet regularly.

The good news is they didn’t seem to feel the pressure in their second game. They were still very relaxed in the contest and didn’t feel the weight of the world on their shoulders, as England did (and in turn choked in their second game as well).

Overall, Spain is on the right track and if they play their game, online betting fans should see them overwhelm Chile.

Team Chile – Betting Preview

Very quietly, Chile has climbed to the top of their group and while Spain couldn’t find a way through the Swiss defense, Chile did. Meanwhile, on the defensive end, Chile has yet to concede a goal through two matches. They have been very disciplined to this point and they do deserve a lot of credit for that.

Against Spain, they’ll have a much tougher time keeping them off the sheet as the Red Fury offer far more weapons than Honduras or Switzerland. Chile also has six points already and has moved on to the knockout stage, so they might not be so fired up to win this game.

Who To Bet On?

Soccer betting fans have to take Spain in this contest. After a sluggish start against Switzerland, they have woken up and rebounded well. That should continue against a Chile squad that may not be so into this game since they don’t have a lot to gain.

Meanwhile, Spain is going to keep on coming forward and that Chilean defense that was strong in the first two games is going to break down a couple of times en route to a Red Fury win.

ESPN sets records for following USA game online

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Even though the United States dramatic World Cup victory over Algeria came on a weekday morning, people who wanted to follow it were able to.

A record number tracked the match online and on mobile devices, according to ESPN, which streamed the game and provided running updates on its websites.

The success across all platforms for a daytime event could have implications for how future Olympics are shown in the U.S., too, with ESPN and corporate partners possibly interested in taking over from NBC after the 2012 Summer Games.

ESPN said 1.1 million people watched at least some of the USAs 1-0 win as it was streamed on an ESPN website Wednesday. The match, which was also watched on ESPN and Univision by 8.6 million people, lasted from 10 a.m. to noon EDT, during working hours for most of the United States.

The network says it was the biggest online audience for a sporting event, beating the Duke-Butler NCAA championship basketball game on a Monday night from earlier this year.

The World Cup match from South Africa was a throwback to a time when not all major sporting events happened during televisions prime-time. Only an older generation remembers listening to World Series games on transistor radios at work or school.

President Barack Obama, when he called the U.S. team to congratulate it, said he was meeting with Gen. David Petraeus at the time of the goal, and could hear the rest of the West Wing erupt in cheers.

The same scene was repeated in workplaces and bars after a match of mounting tension and frustration was capped when Landon Donovan scored a goal with about two minutes to spare, saving the U.S. team from elimination.

Its also part of a remarkable week in U.S. sports that included the most-watched NBA game in 12 years, and an epic Wimbledon match between two unknown men that stretched to three days and earned ESPN its second best Wimbledon ratings since it began covering the tournament in 2003. Oh, and the U.S. Open golf tournament.

“Multitasking is in full force in the U.S.,” said George Bodenheimer, president of ESPN and ABC Sports. “This just shows the power of sports. When you have great, live sporting events that capture the imagination of the American public, people want to see it regardless of what time of day its on.”

The television audience size for Wednesdays soccer game was impressive enough. It would have been enough to land the game in last weeks prime-time Nielsen Co. top 10 - highly unusual for a weekday morning.

At one point, 1.7 million people were logged on to the general ESPN.com website to check score updates and other news. Some 650,000 people watched the game on mobile devices. Both are figures that havent been reached before, ESPN said.

Viewership for the first three U.S. games at the World Cup is up 68 percent compared to the first three U.S. games in 2006, Nielsen said.

Because the United States next game, against Ghana, will take place on Saturday and shown on the ABC broadcast network, viewership is likely to climb even more.

“Theres a tremendous buzz and we expect that buzz to continue throughout the tournament,” Bodenheimer said.

ESPN and its corporate partner ABC have already expressed interest in televising the Olympics after the 2012 Summer Games in London, the last in NBCs current rights contract. Theres a stark philosophical difference in how NBC and ESPN view coverage - NBC holds the best events to show them by tape delay in prime-time if they are not scheduled in those hours, while ESPN believes in showing events when they happen.

“Our theory is that sports are best enjoyed live,” Bodenheimer said. “The way the world is working and with all of the devices available to people, its all about live.”

ESPN and ABC are owned by the Walt Disney Co.

Seattle takes Jaqua off disabled list

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

The Seattle Sounders FC have removed forward Nate Jaqua from the disabled list, meaning he is immediately eligible to play.

The Sounders made the move on Thursday, ahead of Saturdays game at Philadelphia where Jaqua could make his season debut.

Jaqua, 29, was put on the disabled list on March 24 and later had surgery to repair a tear in his lower abdomen. Coach Sigi Schmid says Jaqua isnt ready to start, but could come off the bench and provide the team with meaningful minutes.

Jaqua started 27 of his 28 games last year for Seattle and posted career highs with nine goals and seven assists.

England Slovenia Betting – Maximum Points A Must In Group C Finale

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer betting

In soccer betting more than in any other sport, conceding a single mistake can prove costly for any team. Leading in to the finale of the group stage matches, that fact is no more prevalent for any other team as much as it is for England, whose goalkeeper’s gaffe in the opening game against the United States now has them looking up at the top two spots in Group C heading in to their final contest. If the goal that bounced off Robert Green and in leading to England drawing in their opener rather than securing maximum points never happened, England would be sitting comfortable atop the standings in their division, three points ahead of the U.S.. Instead, England is trailing the Americans for second place, with goal differential being the difference.

Group C

Team England: Betting Preview

For the team that many 2010 World Cup predictions had coming out of Group C on top of the standings, the English have somewhat disappointed heading in to the finale of the opening round. The result against the US wasn’t as shocking as the way in which it was achieved, and since head coach Fabio Capello’s squad has looked very much vulnerable. Their most recent result, a draw against Algeria, allowed them to keep pace with the United States for second spot in the group. However, following the U.S. comeback against Slovenia, England will now be forced to fight for maximum points to avoid the embarrassment of not making it in to the round of 16.

Team Slovenia: Betting Preview

After opening the 2010 World Cup betting tournament with a 1-0 win over Algeria, Slovenia was very fortunate to escape their second game with even a single point. Despite opening the scoring with a pair of first-half goals to take the 2-0 lead to the dressing room after 45 minutes, Slovenia allowed the United States back in to the game with goals in the 48th and 82nd, barely holding on for the 2-2 draw. Despite the result, Slovenia still holds the edge atop the division with four points, two more than the U.S. and England who are tied for second with two each. However, anything less than a draw against the Three Lions’ side will leave Slovenia vulnerable.

Who Will Win It?

For all of the bet on sports talent the Three Lions’ squad boasts, it is an absolute mystery to many how they consistently end up in this position at major international tournaments, that is, when they do qualify for them at all unlike the 2008 Euro Cup. Slovenia had played excellent football until the final 45 minutes against the U.S., which may have in fact been just enough weakness revealed for Capello and his men to smell the blood in the water heading in to their group stage finale, with a victory their only option.

Ivory Coast North Korea Betting – Les Elephants Roll Over North Korea In Finale

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer betting

Online betting players will be watching the “Group of Death” come to a close on Friday, when the Ivory Coast will be trying to overcome a large goal difference when they face North Korea, who were romped in their last game. The Ivorians will give it everything they have to get the win, but they’ll come up short in their quest for the second round of the World Cup

What: World Cup Betting
When: Friday, June 25th, 10:00 AM ET
Where: Mbombela Stadium, Nelspruit
Key Stats: This is the first meeting between these two countries

The Storyline

Les Elephants know that they need to win by a wide margin, even if Portugal loses, to go to the next round after a 3-1 loss to Brazil in their last Group G match. The Chollima were pounded 7-0 by Portugal in the first match aired on North Korean television in 44 years, so they’re just looking for an effort similar to their 2-1 loss to Brazil in their opener.

Who Has The Edge On Offense: Ivory Coast North Korea Betting

The Ivory Coast managed a 79th-minute goal by Didier Drogba to avoid being shut out, but they really couldn’t muster much against a Brazil team who controlled the ball for most of the match. Drogba was alone up front a lot of the time as manager Sven-Goran Eriksson decided to play more defensively against the Samba Kings and hit them on the counterattack. Salomon Kalou has been virtually invisible in this tournament and needs a big game to support his Chelsea teammate, Drogba.

The North Koreans carved out a couple of opportunities in the first half against Portugal, but like Drogba, striker Jong Tae-Se was left isolated up front while the rest of the team defended. Tae-Se’s best chances were from dead balls 30 yards out, which has been the story of the tournament for the North Koreans, and with nothing to lose, you may see them go for the attack a little more in their finale.

Edge: Ivory Coast

Who Has The Edge In Defense: Ivory Coast North Korea Betting

Les Elephants were chasing shadows for most of the match against Brazil, failing to close them down, and the defense in particular had a torrid time with Luis Fabiano. Even though Fabiano’s second goal shouldn’t have counted due to a handball committed by the Brazilian forward, that doesn’t take away from the fact that the Ivory Coast couldn’t handle the ball movement of Brazil, although that’s something they shouldn’t have to worry about in this match.

North Korea imploded in the second half of the Portugal match, allowing three goals in seven minutes early in the half, and then another three goals in the final 10 minutes. They were torn apart by the speed of Cristiano Ronaldo, and then they paid so much attention to him that he was finding open teammates left and right before he scored in the 87th minute. Keeper Ri Myong-Guk probably had nightmares on Monday night.

Edge: Ivory Coast

Notable Injuries – Ivory Coast North Korea Betting

Both teams are healthy heading into their final match in the “Group of Death”.

Edge: Draw

Totals – Ivory Coast North Korea Betting

The Ivory Coast should be in a bullish mood after losing to Brazil, and they know they need to make up Portugal’s huge goal difference, which is currently at +7, while the Ivorians are at -2. They won’t make it up, but they’ll give it a shot.

Pick: Over 2.5

Ivory Coast North Korea Sports betting & Outlook

Les Elephants are -275 favorites to end their World Cup campaign on a high note, while North Korea is rated at +725, and a draw comes in at +365. These two have never met before, and the North Koreans are going to have to deal with the power of Drogba, who is probably going to get double-teamed at every chance as North Korea doesn’t have anyone who can handle his aerial strength. The North Koreans will be trying to keep the score respectable after getting routed by Portugal, but we see the Ivorians scoring at least three on them to try and make up that difference. There will be no sports betting upset on Friday.

Bet World Cup: Ivory Coast -275

Kiwis have support near South Pole

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

So impressive has been New Zealands performance at the World Cup that its fan base has spread to Antarctica.

Kiwis at Scott Base, New Zealands Antarctic research facility 1,500km (900 miles) from the South Pole, ventured out it temperatures of minus 35 Celsius on Wednesday to unfurl a banner saying “Go All Whites”.

The base, which has 85 staff in summer, has only a skeleton staff of around 14 in the perpetually dark Antarctic winter when temperatures plunge below minus 40 degrees.

Staff are able to watch World Cup matches on the internet.
