Wizards beat Manchester United 2-1

In the aftermath of the Kansas City Wizards 2-1 win over mighty Manchester United, coach Peter Vermes tried to be humble. Central defender Jimmy Conrad did not.

“MLS owns the city of Manchester right now,” crowed Conrad, who was sent off in the 39th minute.

A crowd of 52,342 - largest ever to see a soccer match in Kansas City - watched Davy Arnaud and Kei Kamara score first-half goals and then fend off repeated shots on goal in the second half as the Wizards of the MLS handed the Red Devils their first loss in a four-city tour of the United States.

Manchester City lost to the New York Red Bulls earlier Sunday.

United played without several of its biggest stars, though the Wizards were down to 10 men after Conrad was shown a straight red card for a sliding tackle on Dimitar Berbatov.

“Its a great accomplishment for our team, for our organization,” Vermes said. “But in the end, its an exhibition. And what matters most for us is the league, and trying to win an MLS championship. Look, theyve played in Champions League finals. Were not there yet. By any means.”

City officials were hoping a big, enthusiastic crowd, drawn partly to get their first glimpse at Arrowhead Stadium following a $375 million makeover, might also boost chances of hosting World Cup games in 2018 or 2022 - if the U.S gets to host.

“Events like tonights where were going to have over 50,000 people in the building for a soccer game I think will be a big selling point for both FIFA and U.S. Soccer when it comes time to make the decision on which stadium to bring the World Cup to,” said Kansas City Chiefs owner Clark Hunt, who lobbied to bring Manchester United to Arrowhead.

With the unexpected win, Hunt and the others got all they wanted and more.

Backup goalkeeper Eric Kronberg replaced Jimmy Nielsen at halftime and made five saves for the Wizards, who have not won an MLS title since 2000 and are 4-8-4 this season.

In the 11th minute, Arnaud beat Uniteds offside trap and took a well-placed through ball from Kamara. Given the one-on-one against backup keeper Ben Amos, Arnaud dribbled into the penalty area and calmly slotted the ball into the lower left corner.

Berbatov equalized from the penalty spot in the 41st minute after Conrad was ejected for a sliding tackle on him.

Replays appeared to show Conrad made contact with the ball before Berbatov went down, but referee Terry Vaughn went straight for the red card and Berbatov converted with a roller into the lower right corner.

“I know I ended up with every piece of the ball,” Conrad said. “I know I had to go through him a little bit. I tried to sweep it, but Id have to see it on replay before I could say with 100 percent certainty.”

Manchester Union captain Ryan Giggs said the final score only confirmed what was already evident, that American soccer is on the rise.

“You can see it in the standard of the teams, the standard of the national team, the interest within the crowd and the fans,” he said.

Kamara put the Wizards up in the 42nd minute. He headed Ryan Smiths corner kick over Amos and off the underside of the crossbar, and the ball landed just over the goal line.

“Theyre a big, strong team,” said Red Devils coach Sir Alex Ferguson. “Athletic. Very powerful. I thought once we scored the goal wed be all right. Too many of our shots were off target.”

Manchester Uniteds next stop will be a match against the MLS all-stars on Wednesday in Houston.

“The game is improving in the general play of the players,” said Ferguson. “Some United States players are doing well in Europe and in England, and thats the best barometer.”

D.C. United 4, Portsmouth 0 (Friendly)

WASHINGTON — Danny Allsopp scored three times to help D.C. United beat second-tier English team Portsmouth 3-0 Saturday night.

Pablo Hernandez added another goal for United, who also beat AC Milan in May, but have only won three of 17 MLS games.

Portsmouth wore white United uniforms because their jerseys were lost on the flight from their last match in Edmonton, Alberta. They finished their North American tour 2-2.

Portsmouth were relegated from the English Premier League after last season, when they won only seven matches and filed for the British equivalent of bankruptcy.

They were not Uniteds top choice for the friendly, but the date opened when Glasgow Rangers canceled their U.S. tour.

Yannick Djalo scored two first-half goals Friday to lead Sporting Lisbon over Manchester City 2-0 in the second game of the Barclays New York Challenge at Red Bulls Arena.

The New York Red Bulls face Manchester City in Sundays nightcap after losing 2-1 to Tottenham Hotspur. Spurs will play Sporting for the tournament title.

In the 23rd minute, Djalo headed Simon Vukcevics cross from the right side off goaltender Joe Harts fingertips.

Sporting outshot Man City 5-1 the rest of the half.

Djalo added a second goal to complete a passing sequence in which Evaldo Fabiano pushed it over to defender Daniel Carrico, who then slid it to the Djalo. He one-touched it around Hart and booted it easily into the open net.

Bon Jovi, whose band will tour Australia in December, was formerly a co-owner of the Philadelphia Soul in the Arena Football League - a lapsed indoor American football competition.

Chivas USA has been awarded American midfielder Sal Zizzo in a weighted lottery held by Major League Soccer.

Zizzo left Hannover of the Bundesliga to sign with MLS.

Chivas USA had the third-best chance in Wednesdays lottery following D.C. United and Kansas City.

The 23-year-old former UCLA star, a San Diego native, tore his left anterior cruciate ligament last October. Zizzo played once for the U.S. national team, in an August 2007 exhibition at Sweden, and was part of the U.S. team at the 2007 FIFA Under-20 World Cup.

Celtic beats Sporting Lisbon on penalties

Georgios Samaras scored from a penalty in the 72nd minute as Scottish side Celtic held on to beat Sporting Lisbon in a shootout Wednesday in the first football match at Fenway Park in 42 years.

Samaras scored after he was tripped in the penalty box before Helder Postiga equalized for Sporting in the 82nd minute.

The scores stayed level through to the end of regulation time and the first five rounds of the penalty shootout.

Striker Liedson put Sportings sixth attempt over the crossbar. Lisbon goalkeeper Vitor Golas then guessed wrong on Paul McGowans shot.

‘Football at Fenway’ will keep ballpark buzzing

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Its just past noon, and fans are lining up along Yawkey Way to get into Fenway Park. First pitch is seven hours away, but thats not really an issue because this Boston Red Sox game, like the 597 before it, is sold out.

These fans are waiting to tour the ballpark, paying $12 apiece to see the Green Monster without Ted Williams or Yaz or even Daniel Nava patrolling the grass in front. In all, almost 350,000 people will pass through the turnstiles this year without seeing a baseball game.

The oldest ballpark in the major leagues, Fenway is approaching its 100th birthday with what could be its busiest year ever, starting on New Years Day with the NHL Winter Classic and continuing on Wednesday night with “Football at Fenway,” a soccer match between European clubs Glasgow Celtic and Sporting Lisbon.

“We think Fenway Park is a great place to go in the summer with the kids,” said Sam Kennedy, the Red Sox executive vice president and chief operating officer. “Were in the business of selling the brand of baseball, but the soccer crowd is an opportunity for 30,000 new people to experience Fenway Park.”

Officials from the soccer clubs exchanged jerseys on Tuesday night and posed for pictures with the 2004 and 07 World Series trophies. Behind them, a soccer pitch was laid out over the baseball diamond, with the goals along the third-base line and in front of the baseball bullpens in right field; sod had been placed over the infield dirt and where the pitchers mound would be.

“For me, personally, its a dream to be at Fenway Park,” said Celtic commercial director Adrian Filby, who in a thick Scottish accent rattled off references to Teddy Ballgame and the Curse of the Bambino. “Ive been telling them all about Fenway. These guys get it. When they walked in they could see the history of the park. They could see how special this place is.”

Sporting football director Francisco Costa said he knew little about baseball before arriving in Boston.

“Its impressive,” he said. “You feel some kind of magic here.”

Since the ownership group led by John Henry, Tom Werner and Larry Lucchino bought the team in 2002, the Red Sox have given Fenway a total makeover, putting seats atop the Green Monster, turning Yawkey Way into a plaza on game days and modernizing the ballpark in hundreds of other ways from waterproofing to wheelchair accessibility.

During that span, the ballclub has also won two World Series and reached the playoffs in all but two seasons while selling out every game since May 15, 2003 - a record streak that reached 600 on Sunday.

The success on and off the field left them looking for other ways to expand their business. And they quickly realized that the most underutilized asset they had was the “lyric little bandbox of a ballpark” that was christened the same week in 1912 that the Titanic sank.

“Immediately after we got here, we recognized that there was this great facility sitting here year-round that we controlled and operated,” said Kennedy, who also serves as president of the business spinoff Fenway Sports Group. “We have the luxury of looking at new opportunities because our core business is so strong. But we never take our focus away from the core business.”

They have held concerts, starting with Bruce Springsteen in 2003 and also including groups like The Rolling Stones and, next month, Aerosmith. They have brought in their minor league affiliates for a “Futures at Fenway” date, hosted the Cape Cod League All-Star Game and turned the field over to the local colleges in the Baseball Beanpot.

Things took off with the Winter Classic, which used Fenway as a picturesque backdrop for the outdoor game between the Boston Bruins and the Philadelphia Flyers. The Red Sox added a college hockey game between archrivals Boston College and Boston University - the two most recent NCAA champions; the rink was also opened up for public skating and rented out to local teams.

“Pulling off that event gave us the courage to talk about other non-baseball events,” Kennedy said recently over lunch in a restaurant that has been built inside the ballparks walls.

This years Red Sox schedule left Fenway empty for most of July, including a 10-game West Coast road trip that the ballclub began on Monday night in Oakland. Kennedy spent much of the spring trying to woo top European soccer teams to Boston, hoping to capitalize on an anticipated World Cup bump in interest.

He eventually landed Sporting and Celtic for the 19th soccer game played on the Fenway field - the first since Pele brought Brazils Santos in 1968 to play the Boston Beacons of the North American Soccer League.

More than 30,000 tickets have been sold for Wednesday nights match, helped by the strong draw from the Portuguese community around New England. Corporate sponsorships have also been strong, Kennedy said.

“It was a big risk: Soccer is not Bruce Springsteen; its not the Winter Classic,” he said. “From an artistic perspective, obviously a sellout crowd would be great. But not everything needs to be a sellout to be a success.”

Report: Maradona to continue as Argentina coach

Posted by: admin  :  Category: Soccer news

Diego Maradona will reportedly remain as coach of Argentinas national team, a decision he is expected to announce next week after meeting with Argentine Football Association president Julio Grondona.

The state-run Argentine news agency Telam quoted Grondona as saying the meeting would be held Monday.

The newspaper La Nacion said Maradona talked with Grondona on Tuesday and had agreed to a four-year deal that will keep him in charge until the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

An AFA spokesman declined to confirm to The Associated Press that Maradona would continue in the job.

Maradona has not talked publicly about his plans since Argentina was knocked out in the World Cup quarterfinals by Germany 2 1/2 weeks ago.

He was reported to be traveling on Tuesday to Venezuela to conduct football clinics after an invitation from Venezuela President Hugo Chavez.

Argentina President Cristina Fernandez has openly supported Maradona, and a legislator has proposed building a monument to honor him.

Others have roundly criticized him, blaming his lack of tactical knowledge for Argentinas humiliating 4-0 loss to Germany despite possessing a team replete with many of the worlds best players, including Barcelona star Lionel Messi.

Several news outlets said Maradona had turned down requests from Grondona to replace some of his assistant coaches, a move that might give the national icon help in organizing practices and tactics.

Argentina is scheduled to play a friendly on Aug. 11 against Ireland in Dublin.
